Fished the Country Park Maelor stretch on Saturday, downstream of the Aquaduct with a friend who was even more of a river novice than myself (Manley hall @ 950). It was a little tricky for newbs like us but I managed to catch 4 reasonable grayling, biggest about 1.75lb amongst some smaller stuff and a couple of out of season browns.

Fished the top end of the Llangollen water on the Sunday (Manley Hall @ 870), I think it was aptly called the Fridge Pool. Found this more difficult than the Maelor water as I'd never fished it before and so only managed a couple of decent ones. My mate caught his first decent grayling and so we were both well chuffed. Realised a little too late that I needed to go heavier on the point fly and as soon as I switched to one with 3x3.5mm tungsten beads started to catch on a polish nymph on the middle dropper.

Cold but very enjoyable weekend.

Graham

I did FF in Lithuania a lot for 2 seasons, almost every other day, but only in 3 same rivers. I would like to start studyig Dee as my 1st river in UK.

Hi Guys

I love this thread (just thoought i would let you know).

I am looking at fishing the Maelor stretch on a dayticket on the weekend.
I have only fished the stretch once and i found it hard to know where i was allowed to fish as i did not have a map and all i had to go by was the place names on the ticket. I really did not have a clue where these places were and i kept seeing signs on the trees stating that the waters were only allowed to be fished by memebers. Wasn't sure if i was allowed on a dayticket.
If anyone has got any information to share of where i am allowed to fish, or places to park and the likes, that would be very much appreciated.

Oh more important probably, is the river accessable or even fishable at the moment?

Kind regards
Matt

Hi Matt
Yes you are correct, the map is pretty ****!
Fished the river yesterday (Thursday) and it was a very high level, neither me or my mate had even a knock. I've fished it before at high levels with ZERO success. They where releasing water and that on top of the rainfall, I reckon was a problem.
Maybe Gwilym or one of the other local lads may help further
I think they are NOT releasing Sunday so that day might be a better option
