Question Old heavily varnished wooden rod

Hi all , new poster here.
I'm new to fly fishing ,but ,when younger I fished the Forth and Clyde canal , Kelvin , Glazert ,Luggie ,Banton res, the Carron etc all my local waters...with anything that could be put on a line and cast.

Having now started to learn the fly fishing ,I remembered my old grandads fly rod might still be at my dads.
So I thought I'd dig around in his hoose to find it...and lo and behold.

It's an old 3-piece 9,6' wooden rod , its not cane, its got brass reel fittings which look like they've been pinched in to tighten around the handle of the reel, it had crumbling rusty snake eyes , the sections have brass inserts...its heavily varnished ,looks as if it might have a wee scroll thing around the very bottom of the first piece but at the top of the tapered 'butt' and the only thing I remember my grandad saying about it was it was a 'greenheart'.

It looks antique...he's been dead for around 31 years and he was 70 odd then..does anyone know where I can get help to identify this rod , I'd like to put new eyes on it and try and restore it,but as a keepsake only ,not as a working rod.

Thanks all.

Ed C.

That's a greenheart rod, and it looks like it has Hardy fittings.

Have a close look for a serial number on the butt above the button, and post it here. We should be able to itentify the date.

Regards,

Doc

Thanks for the reply Doc.
I made a miscalculation , after finally measuring it - the rod is 10ft.

I've had a look around the butt , just above the button and there's nothing I can see , I remember when I was a wee boy - I think my brother had pulled another piece of brass fitting off and he also took a knife to carve some wood out so that his 'intrepid' reel could fit on it , which it didnt , I hope to try and restore / repair the rod to at least 'good' condition myself , I wont be fishing it at all , I couldnt live with myself if I totally broke my grandads rod.
Incidentally , the light diagonal 'mark' on the section above the butt is actually silver and gold , and looks very like the oval 'allcock' brand logo I've seen whilst researching this , albeit very rubbed out/faded.

This is , I now realise , one of the biggest regrets of my life , I learned some game fishing from my dad , and coarse fishing along the local canal , but I could kick myself now for not asking my grandad to learn me how to fly-fish back then , instead of coming into it now as a 42 yr old novice.

Thanks again for the help , at least I have a name to work on now.

Ed C.
