Default Good rod/Bad rod?

Hi Guys, I have recently been given a "sharps scottie" cane rod by my father. I gather that the company has ceased trading but i wanted to know what peoples opinion was of this rodmaker? It looks beautiful but i have no idea if its any good. Also, it has i slight bend to the right at the tip. Any ideas on how to sraighten it?
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

I fished for years a 9' cane rod with a warp - did't really make any difference. Had it repaired twice but the guys said that getting the warp out wouldn't be worth it. Still have it.

I suggest you use it for a while on different rivers until you find out what you don't like about it and then go and find something you are more comfortable with

Not entirely, although it's no longer owned by a Mr Sharpe. They still repair the old rods though.

Weaver's took Scottie over /Bought the brand a few years ago.

Hopefully they are still trading - their vices were ok whilst they still made them - worth a Google .

Best wishes

Ramrod, the Sharpes Scottie is a great rod. Made of impregnated bamboo of which process was licensed from Orvis, Sharpes also produced blanks for Leonard, sold as the "Duracane", and for Orvis, model "Equinox", Farlows, Lee Wulff, Cortland and other rod makers.

I have a small collection of bamboo rods ranging from 7' to 9'6", all of which see honorable service. Several of them have slight sets like yours, and I've never found them to be a problem. A bamboo rod-maker friend of mine is of the opinion that if it's a slight fishing set, there's no point trying to fix it.

My own Sharpes Scottie is the "88" with an anodized aluminium reelseat. Being an impregnated rod, I can use it in the salt as the impregnation process renders the bamboo virtually waterproof -- I of course give it a good rinse in fresh water after every use, like for any other rod. I really like the medium taper and the ability to hold a really long line in the air, and the build quality is impeccable with very clean strip joints and rigorous 3x3 node placements throughout.

Enjoy your Scottie!

BTW, what is the length of your rod?

Regards,
Kenneth

No longer trading.
Paul Cook used to work for them now no longer in business.
Don’t know why the website is still up.

Is it Weaver (ie, the people that make the vices) that has gone down though or just the rod-making side of the business?
