Default Westley Richards

Westley Richards are famed for their quality shotguns and rifles but for many years they were a leading supplier of fishing tackle.
They are planning a book on their history (it's actually rather more than 'planning') and I've said I'll help with the fishing tackle side [they were a huge help to us with the Dingley book]

If anyone has any Westley Richards Fishing tackle, information or data please let me know. Post pics on this thread or e mail me at churchillsporting AT gmail DOT com

Cheers & Thanks
Brian

Brian, I have written in notes that in 1914 Westley Richards lost military contracts. They may have diversified into fishing gear then, just an assumption.

Brian,

You might remember this:

I'm not sure if it was from Westley Richards because it's not marked, but they appear to have sold something almost exactly similar.

Doc

Thanks Gary, they were selling fishing tackle well before 1914. It would be nice to get some documentation though.

Doc, thanks, nice. Any idea of date?
Wonder if it was made by Wheatley? (flyboxfan??)

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

I'd say sometime between the late 40s and early 60s.

I've got a few things from the same guy's collection - the earliest is from the 30s, but most of it is post WW2.

regards,

Doc

I think that the box was made by Wheatley's. I remember John Stevenson (Mullocks) commenting to that effect in one of their catalogues or could be my memory playing tricks. I will hunt through what I have and see what I can find. I am sure that Wheatley's badged other boxes for them to sell

does anyone know if Westley Richards trading their fishing tackle under the name "W R Products" in the 50's / 60's produced at a shepards bush factory ?

W R Products was the brand that built the 'Speedia' centrepins ,but not much is known about the company and its been muted that it's was a sub contracted or directly part of Westley Richards hence the W R in the logo

I hope to place a Westley Richards greenheart fly rod in Angling Auctions October sale.

Come along and join the bidding.

This type of lure box was patented by a D.J.P.HAINES IN Oct 1917.He also patented reel modifications for Westley Richards in 1925 & 1930.Westley Richards advertised similar boxes with aluminium plates on the outside in their 1925 ish catalogue which were stamped Westley Richards.I also have a more crudely made lure box(without the lure holding rods)but with the aluminium plates, but with no makers details.
The box in the picture looks like it is a Haines box,but maybe before he joined W.R.(just an assumption)hence no W.R.stamp.Alternatively it may have had a paper label which has been lost.Maybe someone else knows more.
