Default Gauging the weight of a cane rod?

I have a wonderful JSS Walker cane rod of my Grand-fathers which I fish reguarly

Question is this - how do I match the right weight of fly line to the rod - I've tried a #5 but this still feels like it's overpowering the rod.

any advice appreciated
