Default Another 'ID this split cane' thread & WTD

I don't have much to go on here but will supply the following pictures to begin with. This is my Grandfathers rod which I think it about 40-50 years old but not 100% on that. I'm trying to ID it and have spent a while trying to find logos that look similar but to no avail. All I have to go on is this:

Now for the wanted section, the bottom of the rod has a spike for standing but I'm missing the screw on cap. I would very much like to get hold of one to complete the outfit but without the make I have no idea where to start.

If anyone can give me apoint int he right direction I would be very grateful.

Dear Emyr ,

Lockfast joints and the doubled snakes - I'd guess at the 1920's/30's for the original go at the blanks - reelseat suggests sometime in the 50's - as to maker ? Who can tell ?

Any time served turner with a decent lathe and some 1" dural bar could make you a screw on retaining ring. Find a small engineer - if you can ! The original manufacturer is probably long gone.

Best wishes

Steve Parton

I agree with Steve! Reel Seat - looks as if it was a late fifties or even a sixties reel seat? also the cork handle looks less than fifty years old? Could have been up-dated or had a complete renovation at some time.

I believe it was renovated and has definately been relacquered. I think the rod was originally given to my grandfather as it had a broken tip and needed some minor repair so the eyes all had new whipping. The handle may well have been changed, in my grandfathers shed when we cleared it out there was an old handle with the reel clips that slid over.

by the sounds of it its a mish mash of bits and not a classic hardy so not worth looking for original bits for repair. Will see if I can get a machinist to sort something out for me.

On the phone to the old man at the moment and he says roughly 1950s and he pretty sure it was bought in Farlows in London. I've had a look and there is a Farlows in Pall Mall but can't find any logos that look like this one...

I reckon you've got a J.J.S Walker-Bampton rod there. WB was an Alnick firm set up by ex-Hardy employees, hence the similarity of style in respect of the handle/reel seat. They supplied rods to Farlows and were eventually bought out by them in the 1960s.
