It all depends on condition. For example I saw one on the bay last week and it made 26.00. It was working and all there. Probable reason it made so little was the owner had "cleaned" it removing any and all patina. It was well shiny-don't let your friend clean his!

Just checked out a vintage dealer Brindley John Ayres. He is not the cheapest, however he has 4 priced at 120.00, 270.00, 250.00 and 230.00. As they say on flog it...condition condition condition. HTH.

Pretty much spot on.The problem is they are not much use compared to modern day tackle. They are more of an ornament(collectors piece) and need to be near mint for any collector to be interested. Also not that rare.

Not sure about those valuations - what dealers ask for stuff and what it sells for are often quite different. Going rate for a good Altex with spare spool, toolkit, Rexel box and papers is about £150, maybe £175 for an outstanding example. Most reels display some wear to the finish, and rarely come with all the original bits and bobs, so £70 to £100 is nearer the mark, assuming it's all in working order.

As for usability, the Altex is one of the more user-friendly of the vintage fixed spools, and was one of the finest available until the Mitchell arrived. I had the middle-sized Altex 2 for many years and landed some fine fish on it, including double-figure carp and barbel. I sold it fairly recently (for about £60 I think) as I hadn't used it for some time, preferring to use Mitchells for my general coarse fishing. The Altex 1 is the smallest, and doesn't suit lines above about 5lb bs; the Altex 3 is larger capacity and was designed for heavy salmon/pike spinning.
