Default Cane rod identification help

Hi

My dad has found an old cane rod in his loft that he aquired from a fishing club fundraiser a few years back. The writing on the rod says:

Alex Martin Fishing Rod Maker 1778 'The Standard Trout'

Its 9ft long with split cane and burgundy red whippings in good condition.

Can anyone help me with

1) The line rating? Its no where to be found as he'd like to try it out

2) The value? Is it a collectable or a usable vintage or a gardening cane?

I've had a search of google and found nothing specific

Jonathan

Alex Martin of Glasgow.Quite collectable and usable (if a little tiring) and in the length you mention probably#6/7.There were Alex Martin outlets over most parts of Scotland and these outlets also sold shotguns under this name. Some of them were quite nice quality also.
Not much help I know, but give the rod an outing or two. It's a shame that a lot of these rods just collect dust now.
