Default wallop brook rod

Hi all, looking to buy 6ft 9in wallop brook cane fly rod. If you have one or know of one for sale, let me know.
Soon the rain will stop and we will be able to target the grayling! Seems like a close season at the moment! Absence makes the heart grow stronger i guess.

Hi. Not sure if you received any info back on wallop brook wands via pm from anyone ??

Im not all up on wallops but I believe many of them were spliced ferrule, meaning that where the two sections meet at centre, there is no metal ferrule connection... Both sections are tapered at an angle where they meet in the centre and snug togeather & are then taped (or back then they may have been bound with string/twine etc)... tapers were created to incorporate this splice so as the rod will flex very consistantly & smoothly with no interuption at centre & may give one the feeling the rod is actually one piece... others could have had a ferrule , im not too sure..

I have never cast one so take all that with a pich of salt.. I would too one day hope to own a wallop brook rod, one day.. Let me know if you have found one & what you think about it ,or if you are still hunting..

Someone here offered one for sale sometime ago but I cannot for the life of me remember who it was?? They may chime in with their opinion on the rod they owned?

All the best
Matt

Matt, I've never seen a Wallop Brook with a spliced ferrule. What they do have is a staggered ferrule, where the tip section is longer than the butt section. Could it be you've mixed up the terms?

TonyR has one of these and he is very fond of it. CrayValley is right about the staggered ferrule. I believe Sharpes produced spliced rods way back when, but Nick Strang has spent the last 10 or so years perfecting them. I fish with a 6' spliced rod of his and it's a pleasure to use.

cheers

Jon

Hi all, thanks for the postings. The rod i am looking for was made by constable of bromley, who made a range of cane rods.I think the rod was named after a nearby brook, hence Wallop.
The rod has a staggered ferrule design where the tip section is longer than the butt.Im not sure but i think around 6 inches. When the rod is stored a short spacer of cane is fitted into the butt ferrule so both sections are the same length thus protecting the tip section in transit.
The concept was to keep most of the rods action in the tip section before the interuption of the ferrule.
As i fish quite a lot of small streams it seemed like a good rod to try.
There are a few around, missed one on ebay a month or so ago!

Regards Steve

Ah yes, maybe they didnt produce any with a spliced ferrule at all.. Unsure why I thought that, having cast a few sharpes, fario, 85,83 etc.
Looking into it a bit more, there seems to be quite a bit of chatter out there on the wallops & tapers too so ive no excuse but to put a wallop on the future build to do list

Hope you find one steve,I'll keep an eye out
Cheers

I have the Wallop Brook in a 7`6" #4 and a very nice rod to use it is.
I havn`t used it for a couple of seasons now and I really don`t know why. I would say its fairly fast for a cane rod and coupled with one of my old Hardy reels is a pleasure to use with plenty of feel.
It has the staggered ferrule as mentioned and the spacer is made from an 18" long aluminium rod.
I may be wrong but I thought Cliff Constable made these rods for Dermot Wilson back in the 60`s and his shop was situated near to the Wallop Brook which is either Hampshire or Wiltshire.

Yes Ian,you are right about Dermot Wilson,i have his book on dry fly fishing and the staggered ferrule rod is mentioned in the chapter on rods. There is alot of good advice in the book about rod tapers and the merits of cane ,glass and carbon for specific types of rods.
The book is easily found on ebay etc.
I gather that a similar range of rods were made for the USA market.
As regards to the fastish action,i think the rods were built for mostly dry fly fishing where a quick action was prefered.
Merry Christmas to all. Steve

I was in my local shop today and we started talking about cane rods and a guy i respect a lot suggested that i find this exact rod.
I have started to get in to cane so will keep an eye out for one but it looks like i might have a bit of competition.

I have just restored an old Fosters of Ashbourne 7ft Airsprite cane brook rod. changed the 6 bridge rings for 6 snakes plus a nice agate butt ring, seems to have improved the action considerably, cant wait to try it out.
Its the first cane rod i have worked on,and i am really made up how it has turned out.
The Airsprite is more of a medium action, where as the wallop that i tried was much faster and perhaps better for dry fly.
Looks like a few people are interested in the Wallop brook rod now, should have kept my mouth shut!If it gets into a bidding war ive no chance, just a poor car worker me! Steve
