Heres the reel that i was talking about before, I'm not asking how i would go about distressing the reel , but how i can tell what age the reel is! ans after measuring it its 3.5" not 3" as i originally thought.

It has written directly opposite the handle on the front "HARDY'S PATENT UNIQUA REEL" and a smooth brass foot. The top side of the oval latch has the word "OIL" stamped on it.
The inner casing and inner face of the spool also have some markings shown below.

Approximately 1909 - 1917 ? (busy so will check later)
If it's 3 1/2" that's the Uniqua Salmon.
Nice finish on it.

My thoughts are maybe this oval latch is a replacement or repair as you can see the different sized heads on the fixing screw? Saying that the 'OIL' stamp certainly looks like an original. Or the screws might have been replaced over time??
Not too sure mate but its a nice example of an antique hardys, should be worth £250 if the right person was wanting it.

Edit--- Think i have found the same reel mate, as this one has two different size heads on the screws just like yours.... have a look here http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/2624124
Extra info - it's an early hardy uniqua circa 1909-1921 wide drum for salmon with IVORY handle was made in 5 sizes from 3.1/2" dia to 4.1/2"
