Hi Laird,
Sorry to have taken so long, I'm on vacation in the Aegean at the moment and missing my fishing, 2 months now, I'm definitely in withdrawal.
The plot thickens as my Hardy serial number list shows that serial number as follows:
1896 31706 34956
This is slightly earlier, I think, than I last made it!
I believe that you have a very early pre-manufacture reel. As such it is likely to have been built entirely by hand and is probably built using the very finest engineering quality available to the Victorian sporting goods engineer. Now to bring us exactly down to earth:
1] I am an amateur Hardy historian.
2] There are known to be dating and numbering anomalies in the Hardy history
3] I'm afraid that even if the initials are to be found on the inside they are
a] Seemingly too sharp and scratchy.
b] They seem to lack "age".
c] The initials don't match the very short list of initials available.
So. Do you use the reel? I would but with very great care but can I ask do you need to use the reel? The reel in any event will become worth more and more dependent on desire. For instance antique furniture sells for less now than it did 30 years ago; why, well I think peoples desire to use easy care furniture where they use it for bog standard living rather than show or entertaining and probably the word vogue sums it up.
I believe the reel should live in a show case and looked upon, dreamed upon in the days of horse hair, lanolin, beef fat, suet and any other locally available float-ant including the then mandatory drying out on rocks while it's brother or sister was put into use in the golden days of country sport. It is without question a very old early reel. I attach herewith a copy of my list of makers initials for your perusal.
Cheers,
