They were poupular in the 60s/70s. A medium priced reel or a par with the J.W. Young Beaudex & the like. A good conditioned one I am keeping my eye out for on E Bay for funnily enough. Not sure if they were made by Sharpes I suspect Farlows but I could be wrong on that one. They certainly made their own reels in early days.
Here is a link I think might thelp you.

Ah, the dear old Mitchell Automatic

I had one for a few years, they were a bit of a "must have" purchase for stillwater fly fishers in the early to mid 1970's, but somewhat died a death when light carbon rods came on the mass market later in that decade. Geared fly reels, the Intrepid Gearfly and the Youngs' geared reel for example, seemed to go the same way, heavy reel + light rod does not really work. Modern large arbor reels finished both auto and geared reels off totally.

Default Yes made by Sharpes

The Gordon started in the 1950's and seemed to stop in the mid 1970's - a good simple reel - avaliable in quite a few sizes for both trout and salmon and there do seem to be some variations, including a clear plastic handle - prices seem to range from £20 in average condition - £80 for mint and boxed. On www.feathersfliesandphantoms.co.uk you can see what I think is a prototype. I'll add some Gordons to the site in the near future. Sizes avaliable 3 in, 3 1/4, 3 1/2 narrow, 3 1/2 wide. 3 3/4 and 4 inch. (I have a feeling that the 3 inch was discontinued earlier than the rest)

Cheers

Colin

I seem to recall seeing a Sharpes Gordon 3.5" reel for sale in good condition in the Fawcetts ad in this months Trout & Salmon mag, think the price was £80 ish if memory serves me correct

i too have one which is also size 3.5" and is in similar condition to yours, it came in a box of mixed second hand reels that i purchased as a bulk lot from a tackle shop just before christmas (at £30 for 44 reels i couldnt realy refuse)

the click check on mine is badly worn and i will be looking to see if a replacement is available and assess the condition of the other reels when i have time to work my way through the box

cheers

Morty
