Default What is this?

I got this item as part of ebay purchase. I assume it is some sort of device for storing leaders with multiple flies?

On front, there is a sign TAIL FLY on a piece with holes and a sign BOB FLY on a small plastic circel in the middle.

On a back, there is an inscription on the small circle: HILLS CAST CARRIER MADE IN SCOTLAND

Yep it's a cast carrier alright, and a very old bottle of Mucilin on the left, I have one of those somewhere.

Ok, but i still have a problem with what a cast is As english is not my mother tongue i was wondering if cast in this case means a leader assembled together with flies? Is tail fly the one on the end of a leader and a bob fly one in the middle?

Thank you

Blue one you are spot on the tail or point fly is the one at the far end ,the bob is the one closest to the fly line ,some of these casts would have 3 or even more flys on them !

I don't like using these hard plastic "carriers" due to the fact they kink (put a crease) in the leader at multiple points along its length. This is caused by the hard corners where the leader intertwines between the cut outs. Can take all day for them to disappear if at all.

If you have to use a "carrier" use a round beer mat, at least there a little more forgiving.

The word Cast was in common use up until the mid 70's where it was replaced by Leader,But older anglers still use it,

What were the beer mats of the same design? I recall my grandfather having several as well as the plastic cast carriers.

I think Grouse whisky brought the beer mat cast carriers out at one time.
