Default Vintage Fly Box with sea trout flies

A women at work has inherited an old silver metal fly box with what to me appear to be sea trout flies in it.I will post pictures of these on this thread within the next couple of days.

The box has Dee on the front and the flies are held on by metal clips. They were owned by the Deakin Family of Bolton. She wants to know if they are worth anything.

i wouldnt have thought so as the fly.s dont look that old you can usually tell by the aging on the feathers/hackles and the hooks they are tyed on ,im not sure the wheatley type fly box has been around that long ,an older one would have been made of wood or the likes , nice collection though i may be wrong this is only my thoughts others may have better answers than me

The box contains some very nice flies, salmon flies generally on one side, sea trout on the other, a collection suitable for the Aberdeenshire Dee. Many of the flies are dressed on gut-eyed hooks, so they are a fair age and are certainly collectable. I would say it would be worth having them valued by a specialist auction house. Having said that, I think I would want to hang on to them rather than sell them.

I'd agree with the above, £30-50 at auction.

I would think they may be worth considerably more. As an example, a recent Christies auction realised £265 for a Malloch's fly box containing 30 gut eyed flies and 15 metal eyed salmon flies. The flies shown above appear to me to be very well dressed examples of many of the famous Dee flies, e.g. Logie, Blue Charm, Silver Blue, Jeannie etc. Also some nice Jock Scotts among them. I would hazard a wild guess that they date back to around the mid twentieth century.

That is a very nice fly box and the colours are still quite vibrant. I find the singles better tied than the doubles (too thick bodied for my taste). The word Dee seems to have been scratched on - but still, overall a very nice thing.

If it was mine I would never part with it. If I was buying it I would pay some £120 if they looked as good in reality as in the pic. If I bought them I would not use them - that gives you some idea of the market you should be targetting.

I often fished with a Professor Deakin on the rivers Conway and Lledr about 30 years ago, where we had season rods. He caught a lot of salmon.
I gather he was a renowned surgeon at a Manchester hospital. His wife from a famous fishing family, it was she who encoraged his fishing - always at his side acting as gillie; they were both great company.
