Depends what your going to use it for. Also how much do you want to spend?

I have a soft spot for B James cane rods, although mine are all just gathering dust at the minute. For the MK IV Avon and carp rods expect to pay around £250 quid in the current climate. They are good rods for bouncing a piece of meat along the bottom when barbel fishing. For float fishing something like an Avocet or Olympic.

For float fishing Allcocks made some nice rods. The older wizards are nice but double the price of the B James.

An alternative to B James MK IV carp rod is something like a Hardy L.R.H spinning rod. I think they are about 10' in length. I think you maybe able to pick one up a bit cheaper too, although don't quote me on that.

Although the rods mentioned aren't cheap, they will only appreciate in value, unlike the £250 quid you could spend on a mediocre carbon fly rod.

The experience of hooking a big barbel or carp on a cane rod is not something you will forget in a hurry.

Davenport and fordham have made some excellent rods for "general" use for float fishing and light ledgering, Just choose the right rings.

I love my Allcock's lucky strike to bits, it's helped me catch everything from Dace to Barbel of nearly 9lbs! Awesome rod...........

Thanks to one Chris Yates split cane rods have rocketed in value in recent years. If you don’t want to pay a lot of money avoid Hardy and Allcocks as you are talking in excess of £300 for anything half decent. Look for Edgar Sealey, Chapman, Milwards, Mordex or Davenport & Fordham who all made good rods.

And if you're lucky to find US-made cane, look for Leonard, Edwards, Young, Payne... Most of their tapers--particularly Leonards--were slavishly imitated in the UK. There's usually a fair assortment of Leonards on eBay as they were made for well over 70 years.

I am amazed no one has mentioned the original Sharpes of Aberdeen rods?????

I have a very very wonderful 10 foot "The Carp" which I got for £100...best offer I have been made is £500 cash! Its a stunning rod! In my eyes far better than my B.James Mk IV. Much better cane for starters..

Chapmans cane rods were always the poor mans cane rod back in the 70's.Thats not to say they are no good, quite the reverse. They do command a bit of dosh these days however, but less than the B James and Hardy rods.
