Default Help identifying Foster salmon rod

I am the proprietor of a custom rod building and repair shop (Country Rod Crafting) on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I came across a forum discussion identifying a "Foster" made rod.

A client recently sent a "Foster-Maker #42258 (Ashbourne)" salmon rod for some repair/restoration, but before attempting anything I wanted to research the history, maker and estimated value. It is solid bamboo, three piece (two tips), 16' long, and is "diamond ribbed" (flat wire spiral wound). The ferrules are solid machined brass and twist/screw lock.

Can anyone help or put me in contact with someone who has knowledge of Foster Bros. rods?

Thanks,

Mike Flynn

I don't know a lot about these rods, certainly no idea on value. But I'd have thought it was made around 1900.

I believe Forster Bros. were started as a metal working firm in the first half of the 19th century, moved into sporting goods (Golf Clubs?) and continued trading until well after WWII.

I tend to think for their tackle as good quality but perhaps not as glamorous as some.

Tim.

Mike,
Graham Turners 'Fishing Tackle' has a couple of pages devoted to Fosters wire bound rods (patent no 1000 of Jan 1892) This was an idea they promoted widely and 'challenged the world' to a contest.

Send me your e mail and I'll send you more details (too much to type here)

Cheers
