Hello Mike,
I can tell you that Abu copied this style of fly. The Abu-fly spinners were made from 1963 until 1979 and they were designed to be cast with a spinning rod.
My flies were meant to be used with a fly rod and the design goes way back. In fact before the people that write the "regulations" knew that they could be considered as "spinners" ! They have their roots in the flies sold by Hardy, Watson & Halcock, Farlow and of course Allcock. Many will know of the Aaro fly for example.
However mine are not quite that old. My latest advice is that there were similar patterns sold (and made at home) in the 1950s. At that time they were also popular in Sweden ! So your thoughts about Abu were on the right track !
Thanks for your input, Mike.
