Default Westley Richards Salmox reel

I've just aquired a 1949 Westley Rchards catalogue which advertises a 4" Salmox reel. It's described as the successor to the Rolo and the design is the same but with slight alterations to the braking mechanism. The picture is identical to the Rolo but the handles are black whereas the brake lever looks ivorine(white)I have a similar reel but it's still marked Rolo.(E not D marked inside,so assume Ernest Dingley.)Wondered if anyone has, or has seen a W.R.stamped Salmox reel or did they just use up all the old Rolo stamped casings and added the modifications.
Cheers Mike

Mike,

I've got a handful of Rolo's, have been collecting the various alterations in the mechanism...does the catalogue show an internal view of the reel? I've not seen one marked 'Salmox', though, all marked 'Rolo'.

Just looked at previous post and realised txt in catalogue pic is virtually unreadable.Took a few pics but not much of a photographer. Here's txt in full.

"This reel is the successor to the famous Rolo Spinning reel. The design has been improved by a small alteration to the braking mechanism.A shoe brake has been incorporated to enable the braking pressure to be distributed over a large area and so ensure more even and easily varied tensions while casting or actually playing a fish.
The workmanship employed in the production of this reel and it's appearance and finish are in every way equal to that of the Rolo.No other recommendations are necessary.

Would love to see one stamped "Salmox" but I'm assuming the casings had already been stamped "Rolo"

Hi Mike,

"Salmox" is a new one to me.
I'd love to see one with a shoe brake as well as rollers - I wonder if there was a second lever, or if the roller lever operated a cam in one direction?

Nice selection of Rolos there.

Brian

Mike, Brian,

From the catalogue description, that sounds like the variant I have which is marked "The Nova"...a Rolo but with a brass brake shoe instead of the rollers...picture here...no retailer's stamp, but "The Nova" appears in a J Peek catalogue.

Hi Stuart.I've got a Westley Richards stamped Nova(D4 Stamped inside)I've not seen the Nova in any of my W.R. catalogues but know they were sold by other retailers(H.Moore of Liverpool being one)
Not sure if this is the same as the Salmox reel
regards Mike

Mike,

Nice reel in the 'white'... and unusual for a casting reel in not having a pawl & spring check. Obviously intended to use the casting brake as a running brake too.
