Default Reel identification

Hi,

Can anyone help identify the reel on the home page of Bewl Bridge Flyfishers?

http://www.bewlbridgeflyfishers.com/index.html

Thanks,

JayP

I haven't seen one like that before; some sort of centre pin?

I suspect that the star backplate is of blued brass or bronze. Someone will know.

Can anyone make out any of the writing on the reel?

Bewl fly fishers don't even know what reel it is!

Surely some of the old antiques on here must recognise it, Cothi?

It seems to be marked "#4/5" which would make it later than 1960.

Glad somebody could make something out of the writing on the reel. I've been playing about with the image on Photoshop and still can't see anything readable.
My initial guess was a 60'ish salmon reel, but that was based on the rod handle as much as anything.
However there is something at about the 11 o'clock position on the reel which if it is part of the reel itself could indicate a casting reel or maybe a big-game reel with a lever brake.

Ian,

I think the part at 11 o'clock is the uplocking band on the reel seat and the rod to me looks like a custom build.

Definitely right on the first point.
Amazing what a difference it makes to clarity when you alter the viewing angle of a laptop screen.
Could be right on the second as well.
For some reason I thought of J.W. Young when I saw the reel, but it doesn't correspond to any of the models I know.

Cheek.

I have no idea what it is - might even be a home-made adaptation - the plate being quite different from the reel - like the old starbacks on wooden reels.
