Default Leather Wheatley fly or lure box?

I would be grateful if someone could let me have some information on this Wheatley box. It measures approx. 25cm x 14cm and has 6 canvas lined compartments. Would this have been used for flies (presumably large) or perhaps lures? I would also appreciate and indication of age.

Hi CA, it looks more like a lure box to me, and it's dimensions would suggest Devon minnows and the like.
As to date, gut feeling tells me a product of the 1950's, but just guessing.

Hello CA (which Cape?)

Have a look here, Wheatley Museum

The curator is a member here and may dive in with an answer soon - "flyboxfan". If he doesn't spot this thread you could PM him or use the contact details on the Museum's site - he's very approachable and helpful

These boxes were made in the late 1950's early 1960's from a leatherette or leather cloth. They were intended to be lure boxes for devon minnows and such like rather than flies. There are two colours (brown and the much rarer black). Unfortunately because they were build on a cardboard body they tended not to last and often cracked or split along the top fold where the body meets the lid.

Hope this helps
