Default Hardy Cane FLy Rod

Hi all after some of the forums wisdom,
I have a hardy cane rod (Pretty vague I know) now it is 3 piece and am told it is a fly rod , it has 4 actual pieces (2 x top tip end pieces). It is full cane as I said, only info I have on it is on the reel seat, holder, stamped into the brass plate it says

Hardy W fitting
16-8-73

Below that on the but area of the rod also stamped into brass is
Hardy Bros Ltd
Makers
Alnwick

CAn anyone point me in some sort of direction in where I can get more info on this rod

Thanks

There should be a number on it somewhere. Once you have that you can identify it quite easily. You could also contact Hardy - they do reply to queries re rods.

What colour is the cane? What colour the whippings? Close or wide whipped? Probably wide if it's 1973. What length is it? Type of handle? Photo?

If you put the numbers together and made 16873, that would indicate that your rod was made circa 1890-1900!!!

Cothi Thanks as I said it is a bit vague, have a photo now but dont know how to put it on here. The info on it stamped as I said in previous post , but yes there is also another number stamped on it which reads 100681. The handle is wooden and the cane (if it is cane) is very dark in colour.

Hi

Is the blank in a 50p shape (split cane )or round (solid wood ), it might be the varnish that's dark or it might be greenhart or hicory if it is round, they also used lance wood but that is quite light in colour.

If it has no date letter in front or behind the numbers it should be around 1903.

That number makes it 1903 and since it is 3 piece and not a salmon rod, it is one of the following.

Nonagonal; Octagonal Trout; Crown Houghton; Baden-Powell;New Hardy-Marston; Gem Featherweight; Tournament; Fairy.

It might also be a "Wee Murdoch" spinning rod?

No the Blank is round above the number is what I thought was a number 1 , but perhaps its an 'I'

It reads exactly
1
100681

Well the rod handle appears to be made from Greenheart. No is Greenheart so I guess the rest is same material.

A very dense wood, much used in the construction of pier piles. A ****** to saw ask any carpenter/shipwright. Lended it'self to fishing rods as it is impervious to water, downfalls are that it is very heavy. Old rods unless treated will "dry out" & will break if used. A liberal rub with Linseed oil may help. I believe there is a company that still makes rods from this material but I am at a loss as to where the market might be. Still good luck to them.
For wood info have a look here

It's a fly rod for sure. The number on the butt cap is the serial number Cothi was asking for. Maybe he can give you a better date now?
