Thanks Loopy, I enjoyed that.
Just in passing, I think I have cast a copy of the 6' "wand" he uses. It was a cannon with a six weight, and quite capable of handling a good size trout (not sure I''d use it for salmon though). I think the original was made by Sharpe's. Quite a nice rod, if in a wierd length/weight.
I must get round to making one for myself.

Cheers,

Tim.

Apparently, the Wulff family were great personal friend of the John, and later Jack, Sharpe, and visited them in Aberdeen often. Obviously, Sharpe's made many rods for them.

In the late 1950s Wulff commisioned Stan Bodgan to design a reel for him - the Lee Wulff Ultimate, and this too was made by Sharpe's. The design was later used by Orvis as the basis of the CFO, initially made for them by Hardy.

Good old Sharpe's, and long may they continue.

Regards,

Doc

Default Beaudex?

Loopy,
Nice video but are you sure it was a Beaudex? They had a shiny spool face. Maybe a Pridex.
Interesting casting styles.

Rusty

Only the later ones had a shiny face. His was one of the early ones, with a square line guard.

Here's a smaller version:

Colours changes too through the years!

Doc ,
that reel bar the obvious naming on it looks rather similar to a 4"Allcocks marvel I recetly aquired ,the original owner bought it in 1955 ,it is a great bit of kit .

Andy,

James William Young's father William joined Samual Allcock's tackle business as a tin maker in 1874, but after three months was the company's principal reel maker. J W himself joined his father in the firm, and took over his reel making duties. He later set up on his own, but Young's and Allcock's worked closely together up to the time in the early 1960s they were merged into Top Tackle, which itself was taken over by Shakespeare and merged with the German company Noris, forming Noris-Shakespeare - later just Shakespeare.

That same reel was sold as the Young's Beaudex, Allcock Marvel, Millward Flymaster (and for a time, Orvis Battenkill).

Regards,

Doc

The pre-war Marvels were also Young made. I couldn't tell you the model No., but they were the St. George style reels. Often with an agete line guard.
