Default Edgar Sealey Fly Rod - Help

Hi,

Ive been given a Edgar Sealey Fly Rod blackarrow rod. It is really nice rod. I have never been fly fishing before and was wanting to know what reel i should buy, and what line i need etc. Do you think i should go and have a lesson first? I am quite a keen barbel and pike angler, but i really want to not have to carry so much gear about. Fly fishing is quite a good skill to learn. Please can any one suggest what gear i need? i really love vintage fishing gear and not too keen on new items.

Also the top ring on the rod is missing is this a reasonably easy fix or do i need to get a specialist person to repair?

Thanks.

Hi Diickie, I have a 10 ft rod, also a Black arrow Edgar Sealey, but it's the float rod, I use it for trotting now and again, lovely rod.
Top ring is quite easy to replace, I think, a heat gun should loosen the old one, and a new one is then just pushed on, after new glue is applied.
The real rod builders on here will more than likely help you, but no big deal.

Hi Dickielad
The rod is fiberglass and will repair as long as not too much of the top section has broken off.You don't say what weight of line the rod will cast but you need a reel to match that line weight ie 6# 7# or 8#. You need fly lines that will be suitable for the line weight of the rod usually a floater and a slow intermediate will get you started. If you fly fish on rivers the techniques are slightly different to still-water.You need nylon or fluorocarbon leader material in different Lbs weight like 4lb, 6lb, 8Lb. Flies and lures are available in their hundreds and the choice depends how you intend to fish. This is a very broad brush explanation and you would be better served to get a good book on fly fishing before you start. The rod you have is old and broken for £20 you can get a new carbon fibre rod which will give you a better start.
