Default Hardy Triumph Casting Reel

I have just acquired a Hardy triumph casting reel but know little about it. Having read through a few books I gather it was possibly made for coarse fishing as it appears to be more of a centrepin . It is 3 3/4 inch in diameter and is exactly the same as in Phil Waller's book on reels "Collecting for all Vol 2" on pages 110 -111. The only difference being mine has a second inner ring of smaller holes on the drum. I am guessing this model was an early model between 1923-1928.
I would like to know if my guess at it's use for coarse fishing is correct and also, what is the purpose of the small sliding button on the backplate which is marked by an arrow. I can see that it appears to ease tension on the spool but it doesnt stay in a locked position when pressed so what is it meant for as it seems to be awkward to use if you have to press it while fishing.
Any info would be gratefully accepted.
Mike

Hi Mike,

Hardys made 2 different Triumph Reels. A casting reel 1923 - 28, and a centre-pin 36 - 51.

I don't have Waller's book but, as it's perforated, it sounds like the earlier model. I don't think they were hugely successful as they were in direct competition with the established and popular Silexes
The button with the arrow is supposed to be pushed out when you replace the spool.

PM me your email address and I'll scan a 20's catalogue page for you.
Photos would be good to see.

Brian
