Default Help identifying old Milbro rod

Hoping someone can help identify this rod it was my grandads but other than that I don't know anything about it.

What I can make out of the writing says its made in Scotland by Milbro
the green triangle says "the finest you can lay your hands on"

There is a line recomendation but I cant read what.

The black whipping isnt original obviously!

All I've managed to come up with so far is that its not a truefly

Looks like hollow glass, so might be a milbrolite Tully.

As far as i know, Milbro sold a lot of their rods through Woolworths chain store outlets.

Best regards
Jim

I should also have said its 10' long, that one in the link does look very similar - a different model in the same range maybe?

I could make out Milbr... so assumed it was milbro, was milbrolite a budget range by milbro or something?

No idea what woolies was like back in the day - this rod is at least from the 60's or earlier - did they always sell tat?

Maybe it wasn't that good even when it was new.

I did test the line rating using this method fly rod line weight test - Rod Building
and it came out #8 but I didnt believe it as I tried casting it earlier in the year with a #5 on it and it seemed overloaded. I double checked the method with 2 other rods that I know the rating of and they came out right though.
I'll try it with an 8 when I get the chance just out of interest

Hi Euan, I still have a Milbro Prometheus. Milbro had a large range of rods running when I was slightly younger (Wishful Thinking) and my dad bought mine through a tackle shop in Swansea.

Glass fibre was then the rage and everyone wanted one.

Simpsons of Turnford may help. You could try through Trout & Salmon for some other old tackle dealers, who may shed some light on you predicament.

Sorry if this hasn't helped. I'll look around and come back to you if I find any more.

Best regards

Stuart

Euan,

These fbreglass rods will cast a vast array of line sizes very well as they flex under their own weight - which is why some people prefer them for very short casts. My #6 Hardy Jet will cast 5 yards of 3 weight perfectly. I've wondered a few times whether they rated the rods very differently then: level and double tapered lines were the norm. Also at 10 foot it may have been intended as a boat rod for short casts.

Interesting I didnt know Mitchell were related to Milbro. I've looked round that site before, looking for info on the spinning reel I got from him - its an early 300/301 the model with the half bail arm, it was with a 7ft milbro rod and from what I could tell that rod had quite a good reputation.

Suppose I assumed his fly stuff would also be decent quality as that was his preferred method. But I guess I only got 1 of his fly rods the rest went to my cousin

I think it is a Milbro Trufly. I had one in 81/2 ft. I bought it about 1970 for about £10, which was a lot back then. I subsequently traded it in at Sportfish towardsa Milbro Gem of 8ft 9in.

It's as said, a Milbro Truefly. Will probably cast an 7#or 8# line,I used one for years untill the 8.5 ounces it weights nearly did my wrist in.
