Default Any info - old Spinner from Studley ?

It is stamped Wm. Vale & Sons, Studley and it appears to be silver plated. Vale was known as a silversmith but what is known of his tackle making ?

The pic shows the spinner, but I believe that both the swivel and hook have been changed. I have never come across any other tackle by him. I would be interested to here more.

Cheers, Mike.

Just had a quick look in some old directories, and William Vale & Sons is listed as a maker of fish hooks and fishing tackle in 1896, but only as a maker of needles by 1912.

regards,

Doc

Hello Doc,

Thanks for the reply, I know of the needle making reference, but I have not found any reference to them as a tackle maker. You did well to find that.

If you "Google" Wm. Vale it only tells you about their silversmithing and needle manufacturing. I would love to see an advert or brochure for their tackle !

Cheers, Mike.

From a history of Henry Milward & Sons ref hook and needlemaking in the Redditch area.

Quote:
Small needle businesses amalgamated, often through inter-marriage between the leading needle makers of Redditch. Henry Milward and sons amalgamated with John James, Wm. Avery, Wm. Bartlett, and thus the "Milward empire" grew.

William Hall of Studley amalgamated with Thos. Harper, Samuel Thomas, H. Wilkes and William Vale among others and formed a group of needle makers known as Amalgamated Needles & Fish Hooks. This resulted in Milwards and the aforementioned group being the 2 largest needle makers in the district.

William Vale & Sons Ltd. became a trading arm of Milwards at a later stage (CR 3097/94 1954-1956) but I think your mackerel spinner would be much earlier than that.
