Default Cased fish

This is a picture of a chub caught in the Thames in 1848. The label says it was mounted by J Cooper, 28 Radnor St, St Lukes.
The fish is 4 1/2 lbs. The fish is in good condition (sorry about the photo quality, taken on my phone), it came from my Grandfather through my Uncle to me as I'm the only one in the family interested in fish.
There is also a second fish by the same maker but the condition is not as good.
I was wondering if anyone on here could help me with some details an maybe a value.

I did take a pic of the label with the details of the fish but the quality is too poor to put it on here.

Many thanks

have you tried to google any details, prices for these items have been quite low from a few years back, but having been to a few auctions of late i think about £150 to £200 could be a reasonable price value. find out more j cooper too. best wishes

I've had a look on google. The company was set up by John Cooper in the 1830's and he was joined by his son/sons sometime around 1860. The only other fish I found were quoted as being early J Cooper fish from 1880 onwards at £500 plus. I couldn't find anything from around the time of my fish.
I did find one J Cooper chub from the late 1800's that was 3 1/2lb and was rumoured to be the british rod caught record.

I agree totally, they most definitely aren't for sale but I would like to know if I have to itemise them on my house insurance.

Thanks for the input.

The nearer the fish gets to the record at the time, the higher the price they command. Normally you would expect the real specimen fish to be in bow fronted cases, which are the ones sought after by the collectors.

You could try sending some better pics to Neil at Angling Auctions

If you look on his site (you may have to register) you'll see Cooper cased fish in the recent auction with estimates well into 4 figures (mostly in bow front cases though)

Many thanks for that, I'll have a look when I get home as the work computer has the site blocked (yes I'm skiving!).
