Default vintage hardy uniqua help

Hi im new to this forum but while trailing the internet for information about the reel i inherited when my granfather passed away i found this site with similar reels and clicked a few links to try and find out when and who made this reel. i found a few lists but none of the initals match the reel i have. i spent several hours searching and decided i would post this so as to ask the experts. I hope someone can either tell me or point me in the right direction for finding out more information. the reel is marked 6 J as you can see from the photos (if i am able to upload them correctly, they are definately in the gallery under the search link hardy uniqua) it still works good and im not wanting to sell, but i will probably want to find a matching rod eventually so i can display the reel on the wall (dont tell the wife!!! haha).
Also concerning the rod, what kind of rod would look good on the wall with this reel and match the period and style.
thank you all
Kevin

hi mate nice reel, i think your reel dates between 1917 -1923, others may date it more precise, what is the size of the reel, i would put it on a nice little 9ft hardy split bamboo rod , they can be picked up at auctions or car boot sales quiet cheap, cheers

Hello and welcome Kevin,

I suspect your reel is a little earlier than NA suggests - 1911 check - 1911- 17.
The spring needs a tweak as it appears to be catching on the spool (?)

What diameter is it?
If you ever want to cash it in.....

thanks for your input. the reel is 2 5/8 for the spool and the body is 3 1/8 diameter i hope this helps date it. is there a website with the codes on it by anychance? ive checked around but nothing has those particular markings i have, that i can find anyway.
thank you

oh and thanks for the tip about the spring needing a tweak (enigma309) , i wouldnt have caught that but i can now see that the lower part is bent up slightly, im sure i can fix it easily... now i know whats up with it.

Kev first of all my knowledge of old hardy reels is limited, i'd actually go as far as to say, what i know about vintage tackle you could write on an ants leg, i presume by codes you are referring to the makers initials, such as D for William Dingley and so on.

I have never seen a 6 J. I had initialy thought you were mistaken and the 6 was an initial and not a number 6 "?" "J" i can however find no maker by that name, and actually the only site that i can now find the makers initials on again, has no uniqua listed at all, but searching through it, may give you something to go on.

Good luck

Best regards

thanks, yeah i was at that website and found it strange that on my reel it only had one initial and one number. im sure it cant e the only Uniqua out there with those markings unless the guy didnt work there for long, but im sure in those days the jobs were for life as opposed to nowadays.
thank you
Kev

hello again , the number 6 on the spool and on the body and sometimes found on the foot, i think are batch numbers,so that when the reel parts were finished they could be put together, not all hardy reels had the makers name on it, if you (google) classic reel forums ,you will mabe get a bigger response from others around the globe. cheers n/a
