Default Vintage Japanese rod

I used to fish as a youth with my grandfather, when he passed away I never really went again. I do have however a couple of split cane rods, they maybe bamboo I'm not sure. The first I thought was a fly rod but I'm not so sure now, it has 5 pieces making different length rods. The second is more solid I used it as a pike rod, big solid wood handle and is about 5' in length. The mark on the rods says Pigeon made in Japan.

The obvious question is are they worth anything, they have been sitting in my loft the last 15 years. I had intended to keep them for sentimental reasons but in the end they are just sitting there getting dusty.

Only sentimental value I would say. These combination rods/ Japanese rods from the 1950/60s crop up every now and then on ebay but they are unlikely to fetch much.

Thumbs up Re: Vintage Japanese rod

"One of those" was one of my first rods as a 'yought,' . A Christ's Mass Pressie from Mom and an Aunt. Fished that rod for years and never found an 'issue,' it is what it is from when it was in its day.

No idea where it ended up, but I'd line that Boo tomorrow if I had same in hand. You have History in your hands, enjoy!

those chrome plated ferrules are suspect, I have seen them crack and split, I used to bring them back from sea when I was in the MN, I have some cane sections from these , there wasnt much wrong with the cane, easker 1

Maybe once every two years somebody either rings up or comes to the shop clutching one .

Usually they've thought they bought something very special in an auction/carboot .

Quite frequently the take the hump when I patiently explain i ) That I ain't an antique tackle dealer ii) That they are actually virtually worthless .

The originals came in a long thin purpose built wooden box with floats , flies and few other useless bits as well . If memory serves , around 5/6d in the Mid 50's - probably worth less than that these days !

Watch out and forget The Antiques Road Show !

Best wishes

Yeah just spotted the heavy duty rod has a split chrome casing but other than that everything has lasted well, but then it's not been used in twenty years!!

Yep it's got one of those boxes full of hooks etc! It's a bit worn and starting to fall to pieces the more I touch it though!!
