Default Self winding reels

Does anyone use self winding fly reels anymore? I ended up with two of them when I bought a box of old tackle.

Tried one -- didn't like it. But then, I've been known to wear breeches, a three conrered hat and shoot a flintlock.

Hi Walap,

As I recall Mitchell made a "clockwork" fly reel years ago that weighed a proverbial ton & didn't really work . . . . . . . . .
for the life of me I can't remember the name of it though, old age I'm
afraid
also Vivarelli make a similar sort of reel today, but I haven't even
seen one in the flesh.

That would be the 710, I had one years ago and loved it; As a Kid, anything mechanical made me happy though.
Sure I still have it somewhere.....

Here's the Franco Vivarelli I reel that i use for #5 lines at the moment.
I will be taking it down again to a #4 line shortly. You can still buy these from the more bizarre retailers, Sportfish used to do them, but alas! About £130 - £150. They also do another that attaches a looped lanyard above the handle and you operate the reel with your finger at a more natural position.

The review in Sexyloops is spot on.
