Default Old Hardy Perfect

I have been handed down a Hardy Perfect.

I know little of the reel but wondered if there was a way to identify via the serial number. Its a trout 3 5/8s
I was also wondering what the small thumb turn screw if for on the rim as it makes little difference to the drag of the rachet strength. Does anyone know what thats for and any other ways to identify its age.
It is a RHW i.e. the winder is on the Right of the reel, there is a white agate line guard.

Hi stubbs, the thumbscrew you mention is in fact the tensioner spring for the click and pawl ratchet, it should make a difference to the pressure on the pawl, but may have lost it's spring so to speak, with age.
I would have a word with Brian, enigma309 on here, he is very knowledgable re old Hardy reels etc, he wont mind, tell him I sent you.

Hi Stubbs,
Nice reel.
Send a few photos, inside and out, and we should be able to narrow down the age
As Mrtrout said, the screw on the edge is for the spring tensioner....

Thanks for all the info.
I cant seem to dismantle it there is no obvious screw just a shallow cone shape on centre of the plain side. Does anyone know how I can open it up so I can fix the tension screw/spring.
Excuse my ignorance but is a "pawl" when you pull the line out?
I fully intend to use this, but it would be good to dismantle it to give it a little Lube.
Heres some shots (sorry for the quality) There is initials inscribed on it from a previous owner (I.A). The text (cant see in photo) says: The perfect 3 5/8
then made by Hardy Bros England.

Modern, 1980's ish Hardy Perfect - use, enjoy and don't damage.

Hold reel in left hand, thumb in spool. With handle plate to your right turn the whole faceplate ANTI clockwise whilst stopping spool rotating - spindle goes through centre of spool (you can see the end of it)

Once opened the 'pawl' is the little triangular bit that creates the click

Good luck
B

I can't see from your pics properly, but on most Perfects including mine, there should be a screw in the centre of the spool.
Remove this, remember it is a left hand thread, so turn it clockwise to undo, opposite from normal, when you have removed this, hold the reel cage firmly then turn the spool anticlockwise, and it should unscrew, leaving it open to the works inside.
The pawl is the small triangular bit of metal inside, which runs against the inner cog of the spool.

Sorry B, you just pipped me.

Default Re: Old Hardy Perfect

does the click/pawl adjustment on a hardy perfect act as a good drag mechanism, assuming that the spring is still springy that is?
It looks to me to be of little effect apart from creating very slight resistence. when pulling out line.
