Default Tackle Tart Questions - research

You’ve just been dragged around the local car boot. You find a dirty old fishing reel. A quick look reveals it is by a known maker.
What other information would you like to know?
  • Model name, and why it evolved.
  • Date produced, and progression.
  • Application.

Any other questions, apart from value?

[We may be putting another book together, and want to be able to answer the typical collectors questions]

All answers appreciated
Thanks
Brian

Information about how to date the reel. With so many makers, models and years of manufacture this is likely an impossible task. Hardy might be a good place to start....

All I need to know is the price. If that's right I sure won't be opening a can of worms asking the vendor loads of questions. Anyway, at our bootsale regarding decent old tackle the policy is buy as fast as you can because dealer face is right behind you. .

Chris.

1, is it in full working order?

2- can it be cleaned up to as new or restored?

3- the estimated cost of restoration

4- is it worth restoring

5- if it's an aesthetically pleasing reel to you! then other people will also find it to be a nice looking reel.

Good article in the current Classic Angling about fakes - one guy had a couple of H reels which he paid more than 10k and they were all fake! .

What I'd like to know if I was in the market for classic/antique tackle (I'm not) is how to spot a fake or what features distinguish the collectable rather than just a garden variety jobbie - ie dating, or unusual features.

I've got some very minor bits of old tackle, some of it was acquired new, if not by me certainly by an ancestor, other stuff was bought from various sources including eBay.
After price, the only thing I want to ascertain is whether the item is still in good usable condition and if not, to see if it could be made so for sensible money. Fishing with the stuff is of paramount importance to me. Having said that there are some items that could be used but never will be, such as a genuine Mr Crabtree front cover landing net and the Starback my Grandad gave me when I was seven. It had been given to him by his Grandad in 1907. It is still usable but I confess it lives in a glass fronted rod cabinet...

Thank you for your answers.

Hopefully, the more information there is out there, the less likelihood of collectors being ripped off.

Incidentally, ALL reels can be repaired/restored - the question really is "Is it viable?"

Cheers
Brian

That covers a lot of variables and psychological factors. I have never understood the reasoning behind collecting anything, but i have witnessed the disturbing, sad results!

Sounds an interesting area. Can you tell us some examples?

Rusty
