the middle one is a mordex merlin it was made by mordex of sheffield and was the working mans version of the allcock aerial.

mordex was a sheffield company (toolmakers/engineers) who made near copy's of other reels designs there are a few different ones such as the mordex major, mordex mentor,
I picked up two last month for £20 on ebay

Trudex was made by JW Young as it says on the badge and was made in the 1960s, they are probaly the most common vintage reel today there are literally hundreds on ebay each day, you can pay in the region of £100 for a mint one in a box, normal price check ebay and see what they go for I have 4 of them but were bought some time ago.

The leeds reel is a single bearing reel manufactured and aimed at the discount market and has been popular for a long time many centrepin anglers cut their teeth on one of these, I still have my leeds reel but never gets used these days. price to buy brand new around £40 but shop around you will get it cheaper

see thread on mordex
Centrepin, Trotting, River fishing instruction.

So basically what you are saying George, is you have no idea.
I think I paid £30 for my last Leeds, a good solid reel, nothing flash, but a good work horse.

£40 new? maybe 20 years ago, second hand price now around £30 on fleabay, new £100+ from what I can see, although much better models available nowadays for that price. I had a Trudex for a while but didn't get on with it, prefer bearings reels.

Remind me never to go shopping with you Jeff £100 brand new your being ripped off, brand new from leeds is only £70 and thats from the manufacturer. If you look around you can get them cheaper than that as tackle dealers are always doing deals

I found that the Leeds is a very free running reel, however it might be my poor technique but I had a lot of trouble with the reel line getting behind the spool and then consequently wrapped around the spindle. No such problem with my Adcock Stanton.

So it's you driving up the prices in Ebay!

A good Trudex is an excellent small trotting reel. If you need to get it fettled/serviced then Gary Mills of Mill Tackle does an excellent job.

The Mordex Merlin is really best for ledgering for barbel and chub. I have a Mordex Major which I really like for barbel fishing even though it is very battered. I used to have a Merlin in very nice condition, but the check was so strong that barbel used to have to take a run up to take line on the bite!

You either love Leeds reels or hate them. Personally I never got on with them, but a mate of mine swears by them and uses nothing else for most of his fishing.

Oh and be careful if you decide to remove the centre boss on the Merlin as they are very brittle and will crack if you over tighten them. The spring is also prone to flying around the house at the slightest provocation - I set a new record with mine: from the dining room to the back of the kitchen in a single bound and 2 weeks to find it!
