Default Hardy Bros ltd reel

Hi all
Found this during the garage clearance too!
Big reel, about 6 inches accross, brass star on the back, brass line guard and reel foot, working drag ****, the handles revolve fine and the brass nut that you undo to take the spool off is loose and free! the stamp on the back states "Hardy Bros LTD makers Alnwick" then "England" on another part!
No expert on these old reels looking for some info and some sensible offers, please PM me! cheers zimtrout

Hello, I have a picture of a 5" Mahogany Longstone Starback reel. My pic only shows a front view. In the centre yours appears to have a knurled ****, my pic shows a standard brass slotted screw. Apart from that the two are identical in every way. The reel was sold as a sea reel. You mention on the back of yours it says Hardy Bros Ltd. Does it also say Makers Alnwick England?

My pic is in "The Dunkeld Collection" Jess Miller 2004. I guess your reel to be slightly later (because it's bigger) than this one circa 1918. The value in this book is 500-700 for the 1918 version. Having said that don't hold your breath, some values stand up and some do not. Were it a 'Perfect' no worries but not so many starback collectors. However, Hardy values tend to remain constant. Now is probably not the best time to sell, economic climate and all that. Might be better to hang on a year or two . Hth.

Chris

Hi Zim,

It's a Hardy "New Nottingham reel with patented lever action", somewhere around 1912.

(the walnut threw me)

If you want to sell it, let me know

Good luck
Brian
