My nephew as been given some old fly gear from is grandfather , he is thinking of
selling some of it but we have no idea of value or if they are worth any thing.
He intends on buying some new fly gear as he just started fly fishing last year.

Claw, tell us what is written on the rods?
Bottom one looks like a Sharps Aberdeen, top one looks like a Walker Carp rod?

Reels - useable fly reels mostly - they'd sell if described properly and with decent photos - no fortunes though.

The first rod is coarse fishing rod from B James it is called a Richard Walker MkIV it looks like an Avon to me but the photograph doesn't show the whole of the writing on the butt where it shows the IV part of the name. It is valuable if straight and in good order with no repaired broken tip and with its original bag. Search on eBay for current prices.

Cannot see the other rod well enough to help.

The fixed spool reel is a Mitchell 300 check eBay for prices based on its condition.

The creel will fetch good money on eBay too. You can find all the current values out by searching on eBay with the exact names as written on the reels such as Beaudex and Speedex etc.

I think there would be many forum members interested in your fine collection of fishing tackle, of course you would need photos and an idea of what you require for each item as on Ebay, many enjoy using the vintage rods, reels etc as i do. as richard said you do need to research a bit as say you mitchel 300 can fetch a good price so to your creel and Avon rod. what ever you do i hope you can get a tidy sum for some new gear to enjoy.

Thanks every one for your help, a bit more research is the way to go i think?

If you are going to do some reseach on old tackle please be aware that it is addictive, and you could end up buying more than you sell....................

On the Mitchell 300.....
I searched for and bought a good (reconditioned) late example (1981) with two spools on ebay in November last year for £21.00. Mine is in perfect working order with good paint.
£20/25.00 is about the going rate for a good one - very common 2nd-hand - they were very popular in their time.

For more info on the Mitchell go here

The Beaudex reel may be worth £20 on a good day - it is not in great condition. Don't get too excited about the inflated prices for these reels on ebay - the £40 and £50 ones just don't sell.
A JW Young reel will generally (but not always) be worth more than a Shakespeare reel with the same name (ie Condex).

I like the look of that carp rod......................

It looks like a Milward Flycast in the centre of the second row.

That will probably make the most.

And the Mitchell is worth more if it says "France", rather than "Korea"

Doc

I'm not an expert on Mitchells by any means Doc - but that one looks french-made (70's?).
But I notice it's missing a faceplate screw, so not in good condition. As a user (spares are plentiful) or donor reel it may be worth up to £20 on a good day.........

dogbloke,

Didn't mean more than your valuation - just more in general. I should have made myself clearer.

regards,

Doc

Worth more than the washing m/c despite having the slightly less collectable script with 'Mk IV' on a transfer.
(see similar for £395):Antique Fishing Rods, Vintage Fishing Rods, Hardy, Mitchel, Abu

Expect the rod to make about £350 in a good auction. I'm unsure about the basket - can it be described as a creel? It looks collectable, could fetch a tidy sum in the same auction if someone takes a fancy to it.
