Does anyone know what the record for a barbel was in 1894? I have found a cased fish which was caught by Richard Wheatley which is less than 6 lb - no one would bother spending the cash to set up a fish of that weight now. So I wondered what the record was at that time.

i dont think records were kept way back then ??

hello is it the same man who made those lovely fly boxes we can still buy today

I have photographs of 3 cased barbel taken in that year. They killed them in those days Bruce.

I'll scan them if there is interest. A cased brace from the Ham Mill pool on the Kennet taken 11th Aug 1894 by W Kelsey. The heaviest 12 lb 12 oz and 30.5" long, the other 29.5" long weighing 10 lb 12 oz. Also one of 121/4lb taken at Newbury, again on the Kennet, by R. C. Blundell of the Piscatorial society.

I think the record was 14 lb 6 oz, later shared with Aylmer Tryon's Royalty British record (rod caught) fish taken on 13th September 1934 which was also set up. Bruce 'I dont think records were kept way back then' eat your heart out!

1937 14lb 6oz from Hampshire Avon is the one I remember.....from the record fish piccies on the inside cover of Ladybird Book of Coarse Fishing

...blimey, just dug it out...record grayling 1949 7lb 2oz, Melgham Water, Aberdeenshire

That grayling was flung out in the great record list clear out on the suspicion that it might have been a grilse and it was so much bigger than any other. There was a photo of it but so poor in quality that was really of no help. I had a recollection that the Melgum was a trib of one of the Solway rivers but I might be wrong.

Yeah, quite a few of those records were thrown out later SB - like the 10lb 8oz chub from R Annan I think, but that grayling "record" must've been distinctly iffy rather than just not verified!

Maybe a few misprints by Ladybird JeffR? I found my photo and will scan tomorrow. The (shared) record set up by taxidermists J. Cooper & Sons in 1934.

BTW - the big grayling was from the river Melgum, a Tay system tributary, recognized as the British record for a good while until the committee decided to reinvent history for much of the list.

EDIT: Thread has moved on whilst I was typing. They even cancelled Miss Georgina Ballantynes 64 lb salmon... until proof was found later.

I thought Tommy Morgan's 1945 Loch Lomond pike of 47 lb 11 oz was the biggest British example? Both Mask and Corrib fifty pounders were Irish; they now maintain seperate lists.

Back to the record salmon: a cast of the Malloch original - like the one at Fish&Fly Forum HQ - was found to reinstate her record: (apologies to those who have seen the images previously)
