Hi I picked up the above reel at a boot sale today...

I paid a fiver for it with what i think is a silk line on it.. dont really know why i bought it nice little thing though i could see it being nice on a little cane brook rod ... was i robbed?... am i better off leaving it old and tatty or getting the polish out and giving it a face lift ?? i dont intend to use it in anger.. but if it is worth more than i paid then i dont want to ruin it...

The line is bone dry... is it beyond help, can it be restored any help appreciated...??

If the line breaks under tension - throw it. If not, lots of posts about restoring silk lines.

Nice old reel, Bulldog stamp on the foot?
Wash with white spirit, air dry. Oil moving bits, wax polish the rest.
Enjoy
£11!

Hi Icky,
if I where you i'd sell the silk line for a fiver (sorry guys!!), clean your little gem and have a look at this site :

Pflueger Fishing Tackle

Then take a cane rod, put it on with a new silk line and go fishing!

Johan

The Bulldog I think (go google) makes it after 1915 ish and raised pillars before mid 1930's. [mooch about on ORCA forum - all is there]

White spirit AND a paint brush works fine. I do it in an old stainless dog bowl.

Wax polish - the purists recommend fancy concoctions (good furniture wax, with no silicon!, works for me.)

lucky you should clean up nice when you can do this and would be ideal for a silk line if you enjoy this kind of fly fishing regards flyfishy61
