Runer,

The places like Angling Auctions & Mullocks usually have a few silk lines going, though they tend to be a batch of old silk lines, rather than just single ones, so it's not going to be a cheap route - you may be lucky though. I think you've just missed the last ones, so the next will be early Spring. I'll confirm that though.

Cheers

Ok I had a bit of a scan on Angling Auctions (angling-auctions.co.uk) & Mullocks (mullocksauctions.co.uk) and I could see some on previous auctions catalogues. A pair of Kingfishers at £90, 16 silk lines from 2 up to 6 for £150-£200 and various reels with silk lines on them. I think I remember seeing an unused original Phoenix (Buxton), but it didn't go cheap.
I think the days of getting a cheap silk line to refurbish may be over, as silk is back in vogue, especially in the US. They may be some cheapies on the Bay, but as my friend BlueOne found, they may be shorter than the originals, or may have some rotting/fungus which may be untreatable.
Terenzios at £90 or one of those French half lengths may be the best and safest way to go.

Cheers

I would go along with stevel's advice.

I had the choice of two when I bought mine - both good, but they had been checked by the seller, who I know personally.

I bought a reel earlier this year which had half of what looked to be a decent silk line on it - it looked fine when cleaned up, but was actually rotten along most of its length.
The rot comes from mould which grows inside the line (and I suppose ingests the silk) when it has been stored damp. You often can't tell that the rot is there just by looking.

Don't buy 2nd-hand/vintage without seeing and testing the line along its full length.

Thanks Steve & (DB) for the advice. I've got a punt on at ebay at the moment. If it doesn't work out then it will be a Terenzio.
