Default Mitchell reels

Hi, I inherited a mitchell 756 reel with three spools. I'm not interested in the value. They were my father's, so I wouldn't part with them, valuable or not, I'm more interested in the quality - whether they were considered good reels. I still use them, and like them. But if they are considered cheap, unrealiable or apt to break (though they've been going this long), I'll put them away. I'm happy using them, as I think vintage thing should not be mothballed, but I don;t want to push them if they are past their sell by date.

Well I'm glad you are not thinking of this reel in terms of it's monetary value because you'll struggle to get £50 for it (with spools) if it were in mint condition.

If you enjoy using it,well then by all means continue to do so.I'm sure your Dad would prefer you to use them rather than stashing them away to gather dust!

Thanks for that. I do like using it. My only concern is that it is getting on now. I'd rather put them away than risk something going due to age. I guess I was after someone saying "they're excellent. Can't be beaten." If so I'd use them, but if they're either cheap or even middle of the range (component-wise), I'll put them away and get something else to take the hammer.

Thanks again.

Great reels by all accounts.
As FOG says, not worth a whole lot, but better-made than some of the modern stuff, and the old gear can be a delight to fish with.

Go to Mitchell Fishing Reel Museum
for more information.

I have the smallest Mitchell reel in the series the 752 and have had it since new, when I was a young lad. It cost £15.00 back in the early 1980's. I fish it all the time and love it because it is such a light reel. Its reliable and has nice sound when the line is pulled out, it looks good in its blue finish and has an unusual 3 sided/ pyramid shaped winding handle, still works perfectly.

I don't think these reels are worth that much today. You might as well fish it hard and enjoy it.

They do look really nice, don't they. I really appreciated the colour and design.

Yes great design - only let down slightly by the fact you cannot palm the reel.

I don't know if you have experimented or not with this, I was thinking of having a play about, but inside the internal mechanism, there is a spring which you can use to change from left to right and wind and vice versa. I m not too sure but I wonder also if you can use this to change the tension for pulling line off the reel. I think this is an important point because I have somtimes had a largest grayling on in fast water and the drag somtimes feels a bit too good. I have not snapped a tippet yet, but compared with a Hardy reel I somtimes use it feels quite a strong tension.

Nice to own a froggy reel though, enjoy.
