Fished there Sunday.

Fish are well off the banks and spread out over the water. When we were there they werent very deep only inches below the surface.

Best spots seemed to be around boy 7 (near millfields) and between boy 4 and 5.
Problem was the sailing boats came out and kept moving the fish so a fast drift was needed to find them again.

We ended up drifting and fishing floating lines with black weighted lures stripped back quickly due to the speed of the boat. Too deep to drop an anchor to fish crunchers etc but you may get away with it with a drogue.

Plenty of follows and half takes on the hang. I'd imagine dries would do well if the conditions are right.

Ian

however I fished the match mentioned and know there was a brown of 3lb caught and a 5lb 2oz rainbow, which won the biggest fish, so I guess catch returns hadnt been filled in by all anglers

Hi CF
Try where the other Ian G said. At this time of year I have done well with a slow glass or similar with this fly:

size 10 B270
body - black microbrite (black microfritz as an alternative)
rib - red wire
hackle - black palmered (lash it down with a 'tail' of thread left earlier)
wing - approx 2 inches of dyed black rabbit strip lashed down with wire rib
head - gold lite brite

Let us know how you go.

Ian

Hi Phil

Not been for a while but I can't see it changing much.

Same flies as for Rutland with blobs supreme on here with montanas a clsoe second. Black flies always score well with bibios also good.
Fish are not far down but finding them will be the key.
The fish are in the open water. I'd probably drift from the middle into fishtail creek and either side, particularly around sitch plantation around 4 and 5 bouys. You'll soon find them on blobs
You won't see too many fish moving, but don't worry because they seem to come from nowhere. Keep moving if you're not getting anything because there isn't any fish there.

Let us know how you get on.

Iain

Well...........Friday came and i was awoken to a fair old wind ruffling the tent. Affraid my friend didn't fancy another rough day out (neither did i if truth be told!) and we gave it a miss.

Thanks to all for the advice though and i'm sorry i've nothing to add.

Went over to Danebridge for a bit of puddle chucking and had a great time catching quite a few stockies. I know it isn't the most challenging of venues but it sure is a lovely place to wet a line.

Default Cormorant problem?

Just spent some time near the reservoir. Didn't have chance to fish - but in recent years prior to this one I have always enjoyed a degree of success on my visits and considered it a real gem.
Cycled around the reservoir yesterday (Saturday), about half a dozen boats out all day. And absolutely stunned to see over fifty cormorants (counted through the binoculars) sunning themselves on the exposed waterline near Sheepwash car park.
While I wonder what effect a presence like this is having on the fish stocks, it was enough to put me off any thought of returning to the fishery for a while.
Would any other stocked fishery tolerate these sort of predator numbers?
Gordon.

I think you'll see similar cormorant numbers on most of the bigger reservouirs these days. Easy pickings for them.

If you were a cormorant where would you go??

The fishing on Carsington is still first class though, only because fisheries are having to stock to allow for predation. It's a vicous circle. And at the end of the day it's the anglers and fishery managers who pay for the cormorants.
