Talking Grafham?

Hello Fellow Fluffchuckers

Me and my Brother are fishing Grafham from a boat for the first time and we both love to fish buzzers/nymphs/imitative patterns. Has anybody fished there recently and can you give us any pointers please? My Bro comes and fishes down here about 3 times a year from Newcastle and he loves the fishing. I just want to put him on some fish that is all.

Thanks to one and all!

Try this:-

Floating line, 13ft leader.... flies at 6ft, 9ft and 13ft.......

Flies should be black buzzer on the point, with red or green holo diawl bachs on the droppers (or black buzzers)..

Best areas:-

Right by the Orange boom in the harbour (casting out into open water)
Corner of Nature Reserve
Sailing Club Bay
Gaynes Cove

The important thing is to fish STATIC...or ultra ultra slow.....most fish are in a band 30m - 50m off the bank....

cheeers rob

Thumbs up Top Bloke!!!

Hello Rob

Many Many thanks for your help. I can usually find a fish or two but I appreciate any help I can get on a bigger water like Grafham. Greatly appreciated and a few to you if I ever meet you.

Thanks again Rob.

Plenty of fish in Savages and gaynes, Rob's advice is spot on static buzzers are the way to go.

Talking Success and Many Thanks!!!

Hello Rob and Fitzy

got to say a really big thanks to you chaps for giving us such sterling advice. Me and my Brother plopped ourselves down in Gaynes cove and immediatly had fish. Many of the fish came to the top dropper and the killing pattern was a green holographic diawl. Conditions were perfect for nymphing and the takes ranging from very slow sliding of the floater, to out and out slams. My brother managed 23 fish and that was his personal best score of fish in a day. I had 18 and managed two 3.5lb fish that really went. An absolute pleasure and as the sun went down, some enormous fish began to show and at least 3 fish cleared the water were in the 6-8lb bracket with huge tails. We will both be back this year and all I can say is an enormous thank you for your genuine kindness and generosity. This is what makes flyfishing a true pleasure and there are pints in pumps for both you guys when we meet.

Again, a huge thank you for your excellent advice.

Kindest Regards

Steve

Were you in boat 4 Steve ? I could see you having a good day

James Britten and I had a few drifts nearby but only had a few fish there. We also caught near the nature reserve.

Hi Charlie

Well Spotted, that was me and my Brother having a Field day on Green Holo Diawls. Great time just nymphing away and I will certainly be returning to Grafham again. Some of the 1lb fish were just nuts and really didn't like to come to the net. Were you the pair in the boat 1 with mustache that was always on the phone? If so me and my brother had a little laugh at your expense as everyone was phoning you to find out where the fish were....

Only trouble we had were the England Youth Team. I am all for the youngsters getting involved in the sport to keep it alive and although I am not a comp man, I can see its a massive help to our sport. However, after the 2nd boat drifted 10yds in front of me I had to open my mouth . I know they were only young lads, But I was more angry about the guide in the boat. He should have known better. I have always observed a 50m rule to give others a chance to have an area to fish, but 4 different comp boats drifted through our fish and I caught their flies..........1 boat was within touching distance of my rod!!!!! That says how close they were. The fish went off for an hour after each of their drifts and I was close to boiling point. The lady in the shop in Grafham was completely on my side and wanted the boat numbers of the culprits.......However, I thought it better that the whole team were addressed instead of the individuals so I declined to give out the numbers. Hopefully they will learn a little respect and courtesy and I am sure that with a little bit better guidance, they will take it on board. After all, Flyfishing is a Gentlemans sport. Good luck to them, I back them all the way.

Tight Lines Charlie and I hope you can lift into some of the fish we seen in Gaynes...........Massive doesn't do them justice.

Regards
Steve

Yep that was Charlie, Mr bleeding Popular

It interesting Steve I had heard there was some issue with boats drifting close to a number of chaps in Gaynes. I must admit when I heard this I was a little surprised as we also spent quite a bit of time drifting in Gaynes, some of it near you boys and I didn't see any of the England lads drifting to close. I'm guessing this must have been before or after we left the area.

You are right it is better to address the issue with the team as a whole rather than pick on individuals and then hopefully they will learn how to handle the boat a little better. The boys need to be supported and encouraged in the sport, if the older anglers get on their backs all the time they will just go back to their playstations! Phil Longstaff and Rob Edmunds are doing a cracking job with the boys, well done chaps!!!!!!!

Yes that was me - like you said there was a period of about an hour when my phone rang every five minutes. Normally I have an earpiece so I can continue fishing but it was bust and in for replacement so I had to stop fishing each time - funny but got irritating in the end.

I hope you didn't mind me calling my beginner mates over (the two guys standing up) and getting them to anchor some way behind you ? Just wanted to get them on some fish.

The guys that run the EYFA are on this forum and I know they addressed that.

Charlie
