Default Canada Lake Cardiff

Hi All,

Thought I would update you guys on a little gem of a spot found by shear accident this week by my fishing buddy and me.

Wed Afternoon was a scorcher down south wales and we thought with some limited time their was no chance to get onto the river so we decided to have a nudge at some small still water (as im still a beginner) so of we rushed to Dyffryn Springs to get on the lakes there. But alas they were closing as we arrived (which was a suprise at 4pm on a beautiful sunny day). So scratching our heads we headed up to Canada Lake (which neither of us had been to before).

To our suprise this seculded little lake with beautiful scenery was empty also. We struggled to find anybody around to pay for fishing so decided to start. First few casts and bang onto a very lively Brownie around 1.5-2lb with a really nice silver colour to it (looked like a small sewin).

The evening turned into some lovely rising fish (some jumping a good metre out of the water!) 4 fish later 3 good rainbows 2-4lbs each (2 taken on dries) and another small brownie finished a grand evening of fishing. The owner finally came down round 9pm and charged us £8 for catch and realease which made it even better!

Heres a few pics

Fish were all in great shape (fins perfect and a lot of fight to them) Would recommend an afternoon here if you in the area. Also the owner said there is some big cock brownies that prove a worthy advisory if you can find them!

Havn't been there for a few years. They were building a lodge for wedding parties etc. Is that all finished now?

Yep they have a couple of lodges up there now... the other is hidden further into the trees (not lakeside)

Heres a pic of the one by the lake.

Thanks for posting the pics and the review! I am thinking of going down this Sat.

I moved to Cardiff last year so haven't had a chance to fish in Wales (yet!) - actually I haven't done any flyfishing for a few years....

Any tips, advice, recommendations, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

I've driven past it many times without knowing it was there, maybe I should have a look.

Yep same here - I finally checked it out a few weeks ago and it looked good but nobody was fishing. Whether that is a good or bad thing I don't know!

Can you recommend other places near Cardiff apart from this lake? As I have not fished for several years, I feel like I am a beginner!

Llandegfedd and Ynys y fro reservoirs - both Newport area unfortunately - are good value for money and offer much more interesting fishing than the small lakes dotted around Cardiff.

Western Power continue to ruin Llanishen reservoir which was the best trout fishery Cardiff will ever see. They're draining it completely now, hard to believe really.

My in-laws live in Llanishen and I used to enjoy the odd evening on the two pools. I didn't know that they were in such a dire state. My personal favourite in the area is Llandegfedd and living at Monmouth as I did in those days I fished it a lot. It's a very fertile water with a pH similar to Blagdon that is capable of growing very big trout (and other fish) but you do have to get to know the hotspots to do consistently well.
