Default Alderneuk - nr. Dumfries

Went fishing to Alderneuk last night....

The fishing was hard at first, possibly due to the unsettled weather on Sunday, only having the odd nip and tug at my fly but nothing with any real commitment.

Eventually, after seeing Wullie land a stonker of a fish on the dry after the worst cast possible i too went onto the dry - Nothing to suttle and also a little early in the season - an orange daddy!

Seeing how i now had the loch to myself and with wullies guidance we wandered round the shallow bay covering any rise we passed. After covering the same fish 4/5 times it eventually gulped in the daddy and gave be a stunning fight on my snowbee diamond 5/6 weight. The end result was a 3lb 11oz rainbow with a tail like a shovel.

Thanks again Wullie and Wulma! See you next week!

Simon

to right simon, reguarding the shocking cast!! Subtle it was not! Saw a nice rise right in close to the bank, tried to drop it short, and made a right pigs ear of it, landing the fly line in a heap right on top of the rise, dohh! said to you that that would be that one well and truelly offsky, and low and behold it slammed that hopper of the top and gave me a real runaround. I just love sneaking round stalking fish on the dries, and your's was a class take, well done mate. been an improvement fishing wise of late, and more and more chances like the one's above are coming along, afternoons and evenings, depending on cloud cover and weather, been some lovely overwintered fish out of late, 6lb to dougie on a weighted nymph, 5lb 8oz to martin on a cats whisker, to name but two. wee stuff and dries outfishing lures at the moment.

Hi Folks
A good day on Wed. at Alderneuk, 5 anglers had 17 Trout, Grayling and his dad varied the tactics from Rabbits to bloodworm and buzzers and then onto dries to bag 9 between them, 7lb and 5lb best two, Grayling had a fish nail his dry and while playing it another nailed the buzzer he was hanging beneath it, unfortunatly it broke the small leader from dry to Buzzer! We've never had two landed at once at Alderneuk, this scenario always happens!! Brian had a nice fish on his 1st visit on one of Grayling's famous rabbits, thanks for that one mate, and in the evening The Kirkonnel duo of Stevie and Ross had a whale of a time, landing 3 each to 5lb plus, but turning and losing many, many more off the top, cracking rise last kick, same on Sunday afternoon after a real downpour, when Gordon and Mike had a lot of chances of the top. Hoppers, cdc's, sedgehogs, klinks all scoring well, buzzers and nymphs when there not on top, and the old favourite rabbit still nailing them, black, green and white or any combination off the three. Bloodworm a good standbye.

here's a lovely 4lb 6oz overwintered bow, caught by our regular "lounge lizard" Mike, nailed on a wee hare's ear, great to see a lot of fish like this one coming out, and a lot of them off the top as well, we've had a tough couple of weeks fishing wise, and it's heartining to see the fishing getting back to it's old self, there should be some great topwater fishing to be had in the next 6 weeks, weather depending, look for those lovely overcast with a breeze days, although the fish sometimes confond that theory by coming up in blazing sunshine! Great to get back to the wee stuff after a winter dominated by the deadly rabbit! Wilma's been looking after a wee lamb rejected by it's mum, mamed Laurie, one of our regulars has a petition on the go to save Laurie from the chop, "save Laurie the lamb" is the title, along with a pic of the cute wee guy, and folk's have been signing it, one of our other regulars, who shall remain nameless!! changed the wording to "have Laurie the lamb" with chips in brackets. hee hee!!! I know who you are, no more victoria sponge for you mate!!

Well done the hootsmun, good evening as well, loads of fish on top, evening anglers did well, Stevie and Davie Lind had 8 between them, best two 5lb and 5lb+, 3 nice fish to Grayling, as well as your catch Scott. Cdc's, hoppers and sedges doing the buisness again. Great to see some consistent rises, plenty chances to target individual fish, fly fishing at it's finest. Long may it continue.
