Default Wentwood Res C&R

Wanted to post this thread about a little known water off the A48 near Chepstow called Wentwood Reservoir.Being only 44 acres ,not a huge water but it has good bank fishing and 5 boats for use .This is an association water that accommodates visitors too.Opening day was a great day with most taking bag limits. This year the association has decided to allow catch and release to encourage more people to visit and highlight how good this water can be.From experience i can say that it one of the best `top of the water` fisheries around with great buzzer and sedge hatches making for great sport.
Dry fly can be phenomenal.
It can be a little difficult to find as it's off the beaten track but well worth the effort when you get there .
If any boby wants to know more ,please ask.

It's been a long while since I went there, wasn't there an algae problem a few years ago?

Beautiful place, time to revisit I think.

One thing, oars or outboards ?

Thanks.

Cost of permits are £17 for five fish ticket,an extra £1.00 for C&R where you must kill your first fish ,usual rules apply you must stop fishing after killing second fish.
Boats are £14 per day for visitors(electric motors are allowed)You can also have boat for half a day for ,i think £8 -£9 .

Fished Wentwood today from the bank and the sport was great. I had my 5 fish limit all on a midge tip fishing buzzers. Fish were between 2lb and 3lb 2oz and really hard fighting. For £17 I think it is good value and I can't wait for catch and release to start on the 1st April.

Default C&R

Hi Fella looks like it's fishing really well has i've just had some reports of lads taking numbers of fish well into double figures on midge tips and buzzers, seems the fish are stuffed with them.
great buzzer pattern for this water is `the wentwood buzzer`basically black thread, orange flexi rib stretched , orange cheeks (i use a paint for models called Citedal)biots are fine, and a thorax cover of mirage(optional)10's and12's are all you need.
A lot of fish have been stocked so the fishing should remain good .
Can't wait to get on the water tuesday.Don't care what the weather's like.

Don't forget that this fishery has produced probably the biggest Welsh brown trout to fly at something over 17lbs.

I haven't fished it for a few years but definitely a very under-rated fishery and well worth a visit.

I was a member at Wentwood for many years and was an outspoken critic of the committee for their short sighted view of C+R.
Now, many years later, they have finally seen sense. I, along with many members, voted with their feet. I wouldn't like to think how much revenue they have lost over the ensuing years.

Glad common sense has prevailed.

Default wentwood C&R

Hi Steve,i know of quite a few members who have left because of this and it has been a struggle to say the least to get the committee to change it's view on this matter but i think change had to come to keep the fishery alive.i'm sure going forward this can only be a good thing and there are still more we can do to bring back old members and more visitors.

Fished Wentwood many years ago, when first started fly fishing,it was £11 then and £7 for the boat for half a day, and i rowed every inch of the water.
Have to visit again, had a brilliant time there, and great to hear that C&R has been brought in.

All the best TK..........
