Default Walkerwood Trout Fishery

Well a weeks gone by and this is how my first week of the new season went...
Just for good measure I'll throw in Saturday 27th Feb when I fished between 9am and 12.30pm had 6 rainbows.
Monday 1st March I fished between 2pm and 4.30pm and landed another 6 rainbows.
Wednesday 3rd March I fished between 10.30am and 4.30pm and caught 10 rainbows.
Saturday 6th March I fished from 9.30am and 4.30pm and caught and landed 17 rainbows.
All the above fish took deep on buzzers, especially a red bloodworm pattern on the point fly of a 12/15 foot leader with a team of 3 buzzers, fished static or extremely slowly with the odd twitch or lift from the bottom. The water at Walkerwood is very, very cold still and the fish don't seem quite ready to expel any of there energy. Buzzers of red and black are working well for me at the moment as others have struggled on the odd day with lures.
The last couple of days have seen bright warm sunshine all day long here, so should warm the water temperature up a little. Fish have been showing over the last week after the pre-season stocking, but don't seem to be feeding at the surface just yet, but the dry fly sport is looming.
I'm off again in a few minutes and the sun is shining again, lets see what today brings...

Just for your info I bought some furled leaders last week off our very own mrtrout... What can I say other than fantastic leaders and thanks Steven!!! I originally bought them to use when I eventually get my **** on to the river bank with a fly for the first time, bought I thought I would give them a whirl on Saturday just gone. They certainly are a step up from the poly leaders I won't be using anymore... My turnover and presentation of a team of 3 buzzers on a 12/15 foot of 6lb Fluro as become ever so more consistent than I could achieve with the poly leaders... HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!!!
Steven if you have a banner, picture or a text block with any info or contact details I would gladly add your details to my blog/website/twitter background for you if you wish... Your going to join Grommit on my recommended page too!!!

Right, time to get the gear in the car I'm off to Walkerwood for the day!!!

Just to add... Float Tubing as now been allowed for the very first time on Walkerwood and nobody as been out yet and there are some very big overwintered rainbows and browns to be had, and I guarantee if there's a float tube on the water they will have a real good chance of hooking in to one! Just wish I had a tube then I'd be the first ever to get out on the water!!!

No problem Steven... Praise where praise is due, these 5 foot furled leaders are quality and as I said in my post I won't be using anything other than the 6 leaders I received from you...

Didn't do to badly yesterday, it was quite a strange day weather wise, the majority of the day was flat calm, blue skies and bright sunshine. So the 5 rainbows I returned I'm more than happy with... More than that I got chatting with a couple of other lads who regularly fish on Walkerwood and it's great to meet other like minded anglers with the same passion, enthusiasm and addiction for the fly! I'm hoping we can get together and arrange some fishing on new and other waters at some point in the future!

Shame theres not more people using twitter on the forum. Fish&Fly and Grommit tweet quite regular, Humungous has one but never uses it but I dont think that anyone else has one.

Time for a twitter thread methinks!

Default Walkerwood 11/3/11

Well I picked the best day of the week to fish at Walkerwood today and I'm so glad I did. I was asked to become the full time Bailiff on Walkerwood this Monday just gone and I duly accepted. Something I've wanted to do for a long time...
Anyway this week I've spent most of my time getting to grips with some of the trees and bushes on the far side of the by-wash that runs parallel to the south side path and over the years as collected a few flies. I put in two weeks work before the beginning of last season opening up pegs and again cutting down trees and bushes and was rewarded with a full season ticket for my efforts.
Anyway this year I have the season ticket again and now I'm a fishery Bailiff.

So back to today's fishing. I started out this morning about 11am on the overflow with a yellow buzzer on point and a red buzzer on the dropper. First cast I hooked and dropped a fish, and on the second cast I managed a 2.5lb rainbow to the yellow buzzer at about 9 feet down.

Third cast missed one, forth cast missed another and on the fifth cast managed to land and return a rainbow of 1.5lb.

I fished on in the same spot for another 20 minutes or so and dropped another two and missed three more and then was snapped after 5 seconds on 4lb tippet.
So I decided it was time to move and work my way up to the top of the reservoir and spend half hour in each spot. Yesterday we cut a couple of bigger trees down to open up a new peg after a 30yrd run of rhododendrons and cleared the by-wash side for the back cast. First cast into this new peg 5/10 seconds after casting my mobile rang, it was that mythering old sod Walkerwood aka Phil. Hang on I shouted I've got a fish on, one hand holding the rod up high trapping the line with my finger the other holding my mobile to my ear. The line went slack and I thought I'd lost it to the sound of Phil taking the p1ss, no hang on its still on as it dived down, so down went the phone onto the grass and I switched the speaker on, to the sound of Phil muttering something along the lines of 'bullsh1t'. The fished darted straight towards me and I fumbled to take up the slack line at the same time giving Phil a running commentary, you'd of p1ssed yourself if you heard the conversation... The fish then leapt and darted of like a train with the reel screaming loosing line. It's a nice Bluey I shouted down to my mobile at the side of me with which came similar replies to the previous one. Anyway a few minutes later it was in the net and the fishery manager duly arrived and snapped a couple of pics on my mobile...

Picture taken and the fish was returned safe and sound to be caught again another day. We estimated it's weight to be around 4.5lbs and my day was complete and I'd only been fishing for about 45mins.
And another photo of another rainbow taken later in the day...
The fish haven't quite settled yet from the first stocking of the year on the 26th of February but do seem to have spread out a little more. Fishing is again on the up at Walkerwood and well worth a visit.

Keep your eyes peeled for a new monthly not to serious competition which Pete the owner, Walkerwood aka Phil and myself are putting together with some great donated prizes and maybe a small cash prize and trophy too...

Cheers all for reading... Woz

Welcome to the club! My "work" starts next Saturday on "my" river stretch. No opening fishing for me. But I'll have my share later. Nice reading, Woz. Like the ups and downs of a true fishing report.

Tight lines!
Johan
