Well I picked the best day of the week to fish at Walkerwood today and I'm so glad I did. I was asked to become the full time Bailiff on Walkerwood this Monday just gone and I duly accepted. Something I've wanted to do for a long time...
Anyway this week I've spent most of my time getting to grips with some of the trees and bushes on the far side of the by-wash that runs parallel to the south side path and over the years as collected a few flies. I put in two weeks work before the beginning of last season opening up pegs and again cutting down trees and bushes and was rewarded with a full season ticket for my efforts.
Anyway this year I have the season ticket again and now I'm a fishery Bailiff.
So back to today's fishing. I started out this morning about 11am on the overflow with a yellow buzzer on point and a red buzzer on the dropper. First cast I hooked and dropped a fish, and on the second cast I managed a 2.5lb rainbow to the yellow buzzer at about 9 feet down.
Third cast missed one, forth cast missed another and on the fifth cast managed to land and return a rainbow of 1.5lb.
I fished on in the same spot for another 20 minutes or so and dropped another two and missed three more and then was snapped after 5 seconds on 4lb tippet.
So I decided it was time to move and work my way up to the top of the reservoir and spend half hour in each spot. Yesterday we cut a couple of bigger trees down to open up a new peg after a 30yrd run of rhododendrons and cleared the by-wash side for the back cast. First cast into this new peg 5/10 seconds after casting my mobile rang, it was that mythering old sod Walkerwood aka Phil. Hang on I shouted I've got a fish on, one hand holding the rod up high trapping the line with my finger the other holding my mobile to my ear. The line went slack and I thought I'd lost it to the sound of Phil taking the p1ss, no hang on its still on as it dived down, so down went the phone onto the grass and I switched the speaker on, to the sound of Phil muttering something along the lines of 'bullsh1t'. The fished darted straight towards me and I fumbled to take up the slack line at the same time giving Phil a running commentary, you'd of p1ssed yourself if you heard the conversation... The fish then leapt and darted of like a train with the reel screaming loosing line. It's a nice Bluey I shouted down to my mobile at the side of me with which came similar replies to the previous one. Anyway a few minutes later it was in the net and the fishery manager duly arrived and snapped a couple of pics on my mobile...
Picture taken and the fish was returned safe and sound to be caught again another day. We estimated it's weight to be around 4.5lbs and my day was complete and I'd only been fishing for about 45mins.
And another photo of another rainbow taken later in the day...
The fish haven't quite settled yet from the first stocking of the year on the 26th of February but do seem to have spread out a little more. Fishing is again on the up at Walkerwood and well worth a visit.
Keep your eyes peeled for a new monthly not to serious competition which Pete the owner, Walkerwood aka Phil and myself are putting together with some great donated prizes and maybe a small cash prize and trophy too...
Cheers all for reading... Woz
