Default Alderneuk 90% ice free

Hi guys/gals, just a big shout out to WULLIE AND WILMA for making any fishing at ALDERNEUK possible today. The work they put in surely deserves better than 4 anglers today BUT ofcourse anglers might think its frozen over like 90% of fisheries this weekend Had a great day ,free coffee, great company and a 5lber to put in the bag Not a bad effort id say and an even better effort from WULLIE AND WILMA. Thanks again u2 and see you soon.Tightlines.

hi all, many thanks jim and uncle vic for the kind words, always a pleasure, been keeping the fishery clear by religiously going out in the boat and clearing the ice every morning, it's getting easier now with longer days and better daytime temps to melt the ice, hi there rs2ford, reguarding our location, we are near the village of terregles 2 miles from dumfries, easiest way in is off the A75 at the garroch roundabout, heading from dumfries towards castle douglas take the 2nd exit marked local access, says dead end, follow the old road back under the A75 and take the 2nd right cut signposted Alderneuk fishery and follow the road through some houses, over a bridge and you'll see the fishery on your right, and the sign posts at the road end, if you have a satnav the postcode is DG2 9RZ, or phone us on 07901 602020, hope this helps, Looks like a good spot for a short report, The magnificent 3! aka the Kirkconnel trio, had a tremendous days sport on Sat, with a 28 fish tally between them, bung n' bugs and bloodworm top method, rabbits and various lures nailed a few as well. Got to big up Davie Lind for the finest catch we've witnessed at Alderneuk for a long time, after a real bone chilling night -6, and an ice breaking frenzy before opening time, Davie winkled out a staggering 19 spanking Rainbows, loads of stunning long term residents amongst them to, and boy do those guys pull!! To many 4lb plussers to mention and a few 5lb plussers to boot, top class display of angling skill, it was a joy to witness, and it could'nt have happened to a nicer guy, well done mate, Stevie had 2 real honeys in a 7 fish catch, one 5lb 8oz and a lovely 6lb plus, what a scrap from the big guy, would not come off the deck, great to watch, winter rainbows at there finest and fittest, soon shakes of the cold weather, Ross plugged away hard all day for his 2 nice fish, next time ross, a nice tiger in there to for stevie, Harder day Sunday when the weather turned much colder, with snow in the morning, a blue and a nice near 3lb Brownie for uncle Vic, 2 nice bow's for jim to 5lb, and 3 nice bows to just short of 5lb for scott, wee stuff working best for scott, dark buzzers under the bung, a nice 4lb 3oz bow for jack on a home made bug under the bung and missed a few too, we don't forsee anymore ice problems unless we get some real baltic weather, please remember the fishery is closed for a club booking on the 13th March, thanks again and best fishes Wilma an d Wullie.

Hi Folks
The chill continues with -6 on Sunday night after the -6 on Sat. night, did'nt stop the trout feeding on Monday though, 4 lovely fish for Stupike, with 2 real belters at 5lb 8oz and 6lb plus, bugs, buzzers and blobs under the bung, 4 nice bow's to 4lb+ to Andy, on lures and traditional wet's, and catch of the day to our regular Mike, who should have been near double figures, but keep dropping them at the net!! still 4 bows to 5lb+ and the most stunning Brownie i've ever seen at 7lb 8oz, will post a pic when I manage to get it sorted, what a stonker this guy is! All on lures on an intermediate, all this after another mad ice breaking mission in the morning, will be glad to see the back of it!

here's a lovely heavily spotted trout of 4lb 3oz caught on a buzzer at the weekend. Did you spot the "Lure" on the post? It's actually a lamb's tail!! Good wind up with that one.

A nice shot of Scott into a trout on a home made buzzer.

Just a reminder that the fishery will be closed for a club comp, on both the 7th March and the 13th March, will get that Brownie pic sorted as soon as, be lucky everyone, Best Fishes Wilma and Wullie.

Hi Folks
Here's that lovely 7lb 8oz Brownie as promised, just been reading the post reguarding fish handling and photography on the general page, as an avid fishing photographer myself, I'll add my twopence here, although it's on the wrong page! Our policy at Alderneuk with reguard to c + r is unless you really want a photo, the fish never leaves the water, we have our own shallow rubber meshed carp nets, which are ample big enough to cope with any trout that swims, net your trout as quickly as possible don't faff about and play it to death, sensible tackle helps here and i'd strongly recommend 6lb minimum leader strengh, once in the net deal with the fish in the water in the net, our barbless only hook policy makes unhooking easy, and most come out in the net once the pressure is released, always wet your hands before touching any part of the fish, flies very rarely get caught in the rubber mesh, which makes life much easier, for any deeper hooked fish a pair of forceps is a must, and shame on you if you don't own a pair!! You can have a good look at your catch in the net, and then just drop the net and let the trout swim out, again the shallow rubber mesh carp nets make this much easier as the trout does not get tangled up in the mesh. If you do desire a photo the easiest option is a quick snap in the net in the water, minimum handling, maximum conservation, on an occasion such as a real special fish, like this brownie, get organised, camera wise, while the fish is held in the net in the water, always keep the time out the water to a minimum, how long can you hold your breath? Have everthing in place and lift the trout carefully, with wet hands, avoid folding fin's, and hold the trout low over the water, or better still over an unhooking mat in the water, quick shot ot two, and back she goes none the worse for ware, using this procedure we've succesfully photographed lot's of big fish at Alderneuk with no ill effects, one exception being in summer time, when i'd be very reluctent to take a fish out the water at all, special fish or not! Winter is the time for pic's, cold air and water temps, make for a much fitter trout on release. Just my thought's on the matter, what do you guy's and gal's think?
