Default Anyone fish Lechlade today ?

Hi, did anyone fish Lechlade today ? Going tomorrow and wondering how it fishing ? Never been before so some tips would be good too. Im not too keen on pulling lures though but will give it a go if all else fails. I am in two minds whether to fish bushy instead as fished it for the first time 2 weeks ago and had loads of action, but my biggest trout is only just over 4lbs so keen on a new personal best.

Cheers,

Rik

I fished it last week and must say the fishing was very hard (mainly due to my incompetence) but the quality of fish was cracking. I was a bit of a plonker and was intent on catching a beast on my 4#, after i hooked and lost the third hooooge rainbow i switched to my 6# and had a good afternoon session.

Ended up with one fish but at 11lb 2 i am not gonna moan. My Dad managed two fish 11 4 and 10 2. Top quality fish fought like demons, and none caught on lures.

I MUST save my Lechlade pointers...! Good luck. it's not easy, but the fisha re huge, averaging over 10lb, and i know there are a good few in the 18-22lb range in there. Personally I WOULD fish lures, black and white ones, with a try on green if they don't work. fish where the boats are moored, or up at the far end, but keep mobile, and keep an eye out for where the fish are being caught. the 'Island' by the ferrry is a good spot, particularly into either bay on the side....

Tight lines

Alex

I WOULD fish lures
Sorry Alex did not mean it was some kind of achievement not fishing lures, i should have made it clear that i fished lures about 90% of the day as i expected them to be the method. Went through my entire lure box pretty much with just one pull and one lost fish. Tried nymphs early on and had two proper takes which i lost on the 4# (one after i stalked a huge fish in the margins which stripped me to the backing before i could blink) and again in the evening when i managed to land one on a little (#16) olive hares ear.

The only lures i managed to get any action on were some shrouded damsel types patterns i saw on here and copied

Well I went there yesterday and it was tough going. The water clarity was not particularly good. I did however have a thoroughly enjoyable day. It was really quiet (as most people probably had there fishing pass revoked due to valentines) and I caught my 2 biggest trout ever at 7.5 and 9 lbs, plus lost an even bigger one as the hook pulled. The 9 and the one I lost were both stalked and hooked within 1 meter of the bank. Exciting stuff watching a big trout scoff down your fly. Will definately be going back. The only problem i see is what do you do with so much fish ?!

Hi Dan, sorry, wasn't having a go, just that the lures would probably be my 'go to' fly at the moment!

What size was the one you saw/hooked in the margins?

Well it was definitely the biggest fish i have ever hooked with a back like a breeze block. My unscientific guess would be over 15lb. Just wish i had not been a plonker and used my 6#, lesson learned on that one. Still the run was out of this world. I hooked it just to the left of the half sunken tree on the "island" and it took me all the way across to the proper island in a blink of an eye and then the hook pulled. I am sure it was just a flimsy hook old due to the floppiness of the 4# as the same thing happened when i hooked another fish from some floating debris below the outflow pipe at the top of the lake.

Advice to anyone going would be to dangle a fly under the debris there, you may not see a fish under it but i would always put money on them being there.

Dan, are you talking about the inflow pipe by the house or the outflow one at the far end?

There are always fish up near the house, its just casting at them that is the problem.

No mate the outflow one at the top end. There was a huge amount of floating debris etc... built up creating an nice raft. With a bit of a flick i managed to send a GRHE through the scum and twitched it up and down a couple of times and all hell broke loose for a few seconds when a nice trout got airborne and spat my fly back at me.

Had fish follow from under the scum a couple of times that day.
