Just got the following update on water conditions from Ed - he's unable to post right now, for some reason :

Prospects look superb. The lake was completely frozen over for nearly 3 weeks in January so the cormorants have struggled to make a dent in the overwintered stock.
The flood prevention improvements carried out last year have kept the water incredibly clear.
Last week the Environment agency came to net Elinor to remove any coarse fish. Only a few perch and pike turned up apart from plenty of superb, full tailed Rainbows which were carefully returned. One small area in the West arm that was netted produced over 40 trout, quite a few over 4lb.

Restocking started on Feb. 10th. Nearly 2000 Rainbows will be introduced before opening day.

So, if I were to show up at 9:30 would I get a ticket? Saturday is my birthday and I really want to go, but don't fancy a really early start (its an hours drive from me). Never fished elinor before so dont know what the place looks like with 100 people on the bank, but I'd prefer not to pay £20 to stand shoulder to shoulder unable to move spots all day. Any info would be appreciated

Cheers
Tom

Tom, there is plenty of bank space but the best areas get crowded - it's 50 acres. Last year I got there late but still got in and had 9 or 10 fish.

You do need wellies or waders, by the way, as many areas are very shallow and you have to get in past the reeds.

Quite a few of the season ticket anglers pack up at lunchtime, so spots do become available. 8 or 8.30 would be better though

Or go next weekend and have plenty of space - pm me and I will send you my mobile, so if you do come, I can give you some idea where to fish and methods.

Got there by 7am but it was sooooooo cold that the banks were not crowded early and you could pretty much pick where you wanted to go. Early fishing was really hard - freezing rod rings and feet and fish few and far between.

After a bit of mooching around and just one lost fish I found a small pack of EYFA youngsters who were clearly good anglers and had found a few fish to be had on the bung, although bites were hard to hit and you had to get a good way out to get regular takes. Once I got it sorted out, it was a fish a chuck really for an hour or two and a thoroughly enjoyable middle of the day.

Best areas were the coarse lake bank, and the West bank generally. The dam and the East arm did not fish too well. Best flies were apps, damsel and orange blob.

I'm sure it will fish more consistently as the water warms up.
