Default What still water near Pontypridd/cardiff?

Hi all,

Was new to fly fishing this time last year and have spent my time fishing the Taff with Glamorgan anglers.

Due to the height of the river i am now keen to look at a backup plan and find a local still water.

I am not sure where is best to start of what i will need in relation to flies/tippet....I am used to the river set up now.

I have a 5 weight rod and reel and would welcome any of your thoughts.

Cheers

Jacko

hi jacko. cefn mably is a good place to start. not too far and can be good for the begginer. the other places are duffryn springs which is just out of cardiff and this has a begginners lake as well. cwm hedd in newport is a short drive away too. there's also canada lakes but i've not fished this one. tackle wise a seven # rod with intermediate and sinking line is best this time of year. the floating line is worth a try too. fly wise i would go for damsels, orange weighted fritzy patterns and the cats whiskers. they're the flies that i've been using.

before going i would ring them up first just to make sure there's no comp on and that they're not still frozen over. shimano waters recently had to take three tons of ice off the water so the comp good go ahead.

i don't stockie bash too often but have started again since all the rain we had in octobter-december. hope this helps jacko

Great piece of info...many thanks....I am crossing everything that i can get to the Taff this weekend as Saturday looks good so far!

If not I will have to see what is available….and crack on today with making a few of the flies you have listed.

I really need to wet a line soon as I’m going mad here...work all week and rain all bloody weekend.

Thanks again for your help; you always seem to be able to help me out.

Cheers

Jacko
