Default Isle of Man

Following a post in Saltwater section I have been set a challenge of posting a thread on fishing in IOM.

I thought I would start my latest trip. Winter fishing was only introdcued during 2008/2009 and although the waters arent stocked during winter, there should be a decent head of fish to go for.

Ragot( member on here) and I decided that we would have a go at Sulby, Isle of Mans largest reservoir. The roads had been closed due to snow and ice for a week and the water would be well rested!

Ragot was keen to start early and picked me up at 8.45 am. He was worried about the dodgy road conditions and wanted to keep below 80mph over the mountain.

We were there early.

The banks were more than a bit frosty !

We tried a variety of methods and struggled with ice in our rings. Cold hands as well .

After changing from buzzers back to boooby , we found that the boooby had frozen solid and stuck to the rod.

It was that cold , there was ice forming in the water although once you were in the sunshine it felt a bit more bearable.

As a last resort , Ragot got out a fine pair of beachcasters but still without success.

So no fish but a pleasant trip and some great scenery.

A pleasure to be out and wettin a line.

We did see one or two fish rise in the middle and spotted one floundering on the surface. There were also a few cormorants around so there must be fish there to be caught.

Hopefully we will put a few more successful IOM reports in the future !

Kevin

80mph over the mountain what are you Manx like?
The last time i went over the mountain i was doing about 130mph trying to keep up with someone with manx plates
Great thread keep it up.
I have been to IOM a few times but always to the TT but now with a growing family of 2 kids those days are numbered.
I would love to go back as it is a great island,
Now i know it would be worth while taking a rod, IOM will get closer to the top of holiday destination list.

Cheers

Munro

We usually have a break in britain every year around march/april and I've always fancied going to the Isle of Man (wife won last year Isle of Wight). Apologies for being an ignoramus is there a lot of fishing? particularly river fishing. This has whetted my appetite for a visit and a bit of sly holiday fishing! excellent post. JB

Looks a great bit of water, great pictures.
Is the water stocked with rainbows or is it brown trout only.

Hi JB

Plenty of reservoir fishing in March and April. Our main season kicks of from
10th March. The reservoirs are stocked with rainbows only (fish4fun) but there are a few small wild browns which show from time to time, especially in Sulby (pictured) and Injerbreck.

Rivers start from 1st April .Wild browns only as we stopped stocking a few years back. Only stocked fish now are salmon fry and smolts. From July onwards we get a run of salmon and seatrout although it is very water dependant. I will try and get some river pictures on in due course.

If your happy with browns which would certainly average less than 10in then you would be fine. Still good fun if you tackle accordingly. Bet it is still better river fishing than Isle of wight

Really nice report Kevin. Some great pictures. Sulby is looking good there in the cold.
Never known it so cold - the sea in Castletown Harbour had a thin crust of ice on it today Must have been the freshwater from the Silverburn helping it freeze.

I might just take you up on the offer of the comps this year - especially when viewed as a "social gathering"

Default More winter pics

Thought I would join in the Manx fun and post a few pics of Clypse and Kerrowdhoo reservoirs in Onchan Isle of Man.

Our winter season is still open at the moment but as you will see things have got a bit colder since Kev and Chris visited Sulby

Kerrowdhoo is totally iced over with just a little open water at the in flow

Couldn't agree more.
At least I'm getting plenty of flies tied at the moment.

Kev,

I've sent you a PM.

Phil.
